| The physical process for substorm expansion onset is an outstanding problem in magnetospheric research. In this presentation, which includes three movies, I shall review some research results from observations that motivate the development of a plasma instability as the onset process. Results from particle simulation on the nonlinear evolution of the instability will be shown. The avalanche-like behavior in substorm activity will also be briefly discussed. |
