Nonlinear Statistical Descriptions of Solar Flares

Abstract:

The results of two recent studies have demonstrated that the statistics of the underlying dynamical processes responsible for solar flare occurences is best characterized by a class of Levy stable distributions often associated with intermittent type phenomena. The measured scaling parameters associated with the inverse power law exponent of the asymptotic Levy distribution, reveal that the assumption of Gaussian statistics normally employed to analyze this data is an inaccurate one. In addition, a dual memory signature for HXR (Hard X-Ray) flares is revealed.
