On the Trail of the Higgs Boson

Dr. M. Narain
Dept. of Physics, Boston University

I will present the current plans in the world of particle physics to hunt down the Higgs Boson, the most hotly pursued particle today. The Standard Model of particle physics predicts that the Higgs Boson (or a set of Higgs Bosons) is responsible for generating the mass of other particles in the world around us. This search is performed using powerful particle accelerators. I will start out by describing the mechanism of mass generation, discuss the searches in the past for this particle and then spend the core of the presentation on the currently planned search of this particle at the Fermilab Tevatron, the world's highest energy accelerator in operation.
