Observables of quantum mechanical systems form a C*-algebra A while quantum maps are represented by linear positive maps t : A ® A. I outline the new approach to a characterization as well as to classification of positive maps. In particular, I shall discuss the structure of positive maps for two and three dimensional systems in detail. The obtained characterization of positive maps is applied to a discussion on quantum correlations and entanglement.
