Title: Neutron Scattering and Magnetism
Neutrons carry magnetic moments that interact with moments of magnetic ions in a material via dipole-dipole interaction. Elastic neutron scattering can be used to determine the arrangement and magnitude of magnetic moments, and inelastic neutron scattering can be used for the measurement of magnetic excitations.
I will discuss the use of neutron scattering for determination of magnetic properties in a material. A variety of useful neutron-scattering techniques, such as diffraction, reflectometry, small-angle scattering and inelastic scattering will be introduced, and exemplary results will be shown.
Finally, the neutron-scattering research capabilities at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) will be discussed.
