Message from the President

May 21, 2009

To the University Community:

On Friday, May 15, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention downgraded the travel warning to Mexico to a health precaution.

President James D. Spaniolo

Yesterday, UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa lifted the restriction on nonessential travel to Mexico that has been in place for UT System institutions since April 26.

Although the restriction has been removed, it is critical that travel to Mexico resume with conditional travel approvals, based on a review that considers the purpose of the trip, types of activities planned, confirmed H1N1 flu cases in the region, availability of health care, medical advisories, recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the International SOS, and any guidance regarding isolation after return.

Conditional approvals will be determined by deans and vice presidents and will be based on the specific circumstances of the travel involved. Questions or concerns regarding travel to Mexico should be directed to Dr. Judy Young, executive director of international education, at jyoung@uta.edu or 817-272-2355.

In addition, any employee or student traveling internationally on University business or sponsored trips is required to enter an itinerary with the International SOS. This can be accomplished automatically when using a contracted travel agency.

Thank you for your assistance and cooperation.

Sincerely,

James D. Spaniolo
