President James D. Spaniolo's statement in response to Hurricane Katrina

August 31, 2005

I am extremely saddened by the devastation that Hurricane Katrina has caused along the Gulf Coast. While the damage to cities and towns throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama has already been calculated in the tens of billions of dollars, the tragedy of the loss of lives cannot be measured. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families and to members of the UT Arlington community who have family or friends in the affected areas.

I encourage each member of the UT Arlington community to support relief efforts in some way. The Department of Homeland Security has asked that donations be made in the form of financial contributions, rather than supplies, which are difficult to get into the affected areas at this time. Anyone may bring a donation to the Center for Community Service Learning on the lower level of Davis Hall or the Student Activities Office on the lower level of the University Center. You may also contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-HELP-NOW or www.redcross.org, or the charitable organization of your choice.

We have already contacted our colleagues at universities and colleges that were in the path of Katrina and will try to accommodate their needs in any way we can. During this evolving and worsening crisis, UT Arlington stands ready to provide whatever assistance is required to help the people who have been devastated by this monster storm.
