Dear Colleagues:
I would like to update the UT Arlington community concerning what we are doing to help those affected by the Hurricane Katrina tragedy.
Currently, we are looking at requests on a case-by-case basis from almost 200 students from universities throughout the affected region who would like to transfer to UT Arlington. To get these students in class as soon as possible, out-of-state tuition is being waived, and tuition bills and transcript requirements are being delayed. We would like to have all these students enrolled by September 12. If you would like to house any displaced student, please contact Janis Walkup in the Office of the Provost at (817) 272-2103.
We are trying to accommodate as many students transferring here from the disaster area as possible.
We have created a Web site (http://www.uta.edu/public-affairs/katrina.html) that lists the many ways UT Arlington is reaching out to those in such great need. I urge you to visit this site, as it will be constantly updated with news, information, and ways you can help.
I want to thank all of you for the rapid outpouring of support from our UT Arlington community. This has been most impressive and generous, but with the devastating effects of this storm and its aftermath, certainly there is much more to do in the days and weeks ahead.
Francis Bacon once wrote that "in charity, there can be no excess." Let our response as a university and as individuals in these times of great need be in that spirit.
Sincerely,
Jim
