UT Arlington Joins Western Athletic Conference

Dear Colleagues, Students, Alumni, and Friends:

President James D. Spaniolo

The University of Texas at Arlington begins a new era in intercollegiate athletics today.

The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) has extended an invitation for UT Arlington to join the conference in July 2012, and we have accepted. The UT System Board of Regents approved the move earlier today.

This is a great honor and an extraordinary opportunity for UT Arlington to join a prestigious national conference. The WAC has an excellent reputation and a strong competitive profile, both in athletics and in academics. UT Arlington’s move to the conference is a significant recognition of our growing prominence and a giant step toward creating a new vision for our intercollegiate athletics program.

The timing of the conference change simply couldn’t be better. UT Arlington’s entry into the WAC will coincide with our first full basketball season in the new College Park Center. The combination of a new athletic conference and a new events center will generate pride among our students, alumni, faculty, staff, and fans. We’re doubly pleased that UT Arlington will join two other formidable Texas institutions in the conference—UT San Antonio and Texas State University—creating new opportunities for rivalries and competition.

We look forward to sharing more good news about College Park Center and our athletics program in the months ahead.

Go Mavericks!

Sincerely,

James D. Spaniolo
President
