Dr. Jose Angel Gutierrez earned a Ph.D. in Government from the University of Texas at Austin and a J.D. from the University of Houston. He has published 10 books (with more in progress), as well as book chapters and articles. His international standing in his field led to him being contracted by Oxford University Press to write five entries for the Oxford Encyclopedia of Latinos and Latinas in the United States (2005). He has conducted more than 200 videotaped ethnographic interviews and almost 200 oral history interviews with Mexican American public figures (77 of them digitized and available on the internet as “Tejano Voices” on a UTA Libraries website: http://libraries.uta.edu/tejanovoices).

Dr. Gutierrez’s translation and edition of Reies L󰥺 Tijerina’s They Called Me “King Tiger”: My Struggle for the Land and Our Rights (University of Houston: Arte P?o Press, 2000; Hispanic Civil Rights Book Series) appeared in a series whose purpose is explained by its executive editor, Henry A. J. Ramos: “This series, supported by leading U.S. funding institutions, such as the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, seeks to expand national understanding and appreciation of the significant struggles and contributions of post-World War II Latinos in American civil culture. By elevating attention to Latino community issues, leaders, and institutions that have shaped contemporary American realities, the series is intended to enhance popular recognition of the national Latino community’s essential place in modern American society and history.” (pp.viii-ix).

His record of service is outstanding, dedicated, and extraordinarily wide-ranging, from mentoring McNair students and faculty to serving as the Texas Chair of the National Association of Hispanic and Latino Studies (2000-2003). He served as State Treasurer of the Mexican American Democrats of Texas (1997-2000) and as a member of the Ethics Commission for the City of Dallas (1999-2000). He has served since 2000 as Chair of the Southern Methodist University Bilingual Education Advisory Council. In 2002 he was one of four plenary speakers at the conference “The Minority Becomes the Majority. Social and Political Challenges for the 21st Century” at Texas Women’s University, March 1, 2002 and participated in a panel discussion with the other plenary speakers: Dr. Marta Tienda (Distinguished Professor of Sociology & Public Affairs, Princeton U.), Dr. Walter Allen (Professor of Sociology, UCLA), and Dr. Franklyn Jenifer (President, UT-Dallas). His honors include being named one of the “100 Outstanding Latino Texans of the 20th century” by Latino Monthly in 2000.
