The entire UT Arlington community was shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic shooting at Northern Illinois University yesterday.

I have sent condolences to President John G. Peters and the NIU community on behalf of our University family. We mourn their loss.

Though this latest inexplicable act of violence occurred on a campus more than a thousand miles away, we are mindful of the need to be prepared.

Our University has a comprehensive Crisis Management Plan that is continuously updated and tested. This plan includes an Emergency Notification Network to alert students, faculty, staff, and visitors of any incidents if they occur and to provide instructions on what actions to take in an emergency.

As a precaution, we have our police and security guards on alert and have increased our on-duty police patrols on campus.

To report any suspicious activity or emergency on campus, please call the UT Arlington Police Department at 817-272-3003 (from a UT Arlington phone, simply dial 2-3003).

As always, our counseling center staff is available for students at 817-272-3671, and our mental health services staff is available at 817-272-2771. Additionally, our Behavior Intervention Team, which is trained in providing intervention and a safety net for distressed students, is available at 817-272-2354.
