My literacy research website

I am interested, broadly, in the topic of reading difficulties for students across the age spectrum. My inquiry and interest into this topic includes the participation of families and communities in creating support systems for students who face reading challenges.

I primarily use narrative and qualitative approaches to examine the impact that literacy challenges have on the lives of those who experience these difficulties. I am currently studying the role that community literacy sponsors play in helping adult basic literacy and ESL students succeed. My dissertation research focused on the participation of parents in their young children's literacy learning at home and their pereceptions of the reading intervention programs their children received in school.

I also examine the historical contexts of reading instruction. I am most interested in the work of seminal scholars like Jeanne Chall. The late Jeanne Chall's research and writing represents the life work of a scholar who sought evidence-based methods towards helping students learn to read. I am working on a paper that focuses on her contributions to the area of reading difficulties and dyslexia.
