As Dean, I provide leadership for the teaching, research, and service missions of the School of Education, one of nine schools and colleges at this major research university.  Reporting to the President and Provost for Academic Affairs, I provide leadership for the departments of Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Administration, Kinesiology, and (soon to be) Counseling.  Additionally, I oversee the Center for Action Research, the Center for Educational Technology, the Center for Bilingual Education, the Center for Science Education, and chair the University-wide K-16 partnership initiative.

Continuing Administrative Responsibilities

  • Managing the instructional and personnel functions of the School with a commitment to collegial governance, cultural diversity, and equal opportunity
  • Promoting strong school/community collaboration, and serving as an effective advocate for the School within the University and externally to a wide range of professional and community leaders
  • Supporting the faculty in teaching, research, service, and professional development and in interdisciplinary opportunities within the School and throughout the University
  • Obtaining through fundraising and grants the resources the School needs to grow and to fulfill its mission
  • Overseeing hiring, tenure and promotion decisions
  • Coordinating the university-wide K-16 effort
  • Serving on university-wide councils and committees

Special Assistant to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, West Virginia University
 

The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research is the Chief Academic Officer and second-ranking official of the University.  The Provost oversees all academic programs offered by the University and personnel associated with them, save those programs and personnel at the Health Sciences Center.  The Provost provides leadership on curricula and faculty development and governs the budget, administration, evaluation, and planning of the academic and research functions of the University.  The Provost appoints the Deans for all academic programs, except those at the Health Science Center.  As Special Assistant to the Provost and Vice President, I was able to have experiences in academic administration that prepared me to move to a Provost’s position.  My four focus areas at West Virginia University included: Student Affairs, University Budgeting, Multicultural Education, and Graduate Programs.

 Continuing Administrative Responsibilities

  • Served as a member of the President’s Cabinet
  • Served as a member of the Provost’s Staff
  • Worked with the Associate Provost of Curriculum and Instruction to prepare a review of University graduate programs
  • Served as member of the University Graduate Council
  • Worked with the Provost and Associate Provost of Academic Affairs to prepare and administer the University budget and strategic planning proposals reflecting departmental needs
  • Worked with the Associate Provost for Student Affairs and the Student Affairs Dean and Directors to prepare a review of the West Virginia University Student Affairs Unit as well as a review of 10 SREB peer Student Affairs Units
  • Co-chaired with the Provost of Academic Affairs and Research the University Multicultural Committee
  • Fostered goals of affirmative action/equal opportunity/social justice
  • When requested to do so by the Provost – served as a spokesperson/liaison to both internal and external constituencies
  • Interacted with the WVU Council of Academic Deans

Interim Director Center for Women Studies
 

As Interim Director, I was responsible for administration of the Center, which included overseeing personnel, ensuring adequate financial resources and program development to meet the directives of the mission statement including teaching, research, and community service.  I initiated short and long-term planning and development and evaluation of the Center.  I reported to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and coordinated curriculum development and other course offerings in women’s studies.

Tasks:

  • Prepared budget for submission to the Dean for state funding
  • Prepared budget and income projections for all the funding that went through the WVU Foundation
  • Met with staff weekly to coordinate activities and calendar
  • Assumed financial accountability for funds and endowments given to the Center from the state of West Virginia, foundations and individuals
  • Hired and fired Center staff and conducted evaluations of job performance
  • Represented the Center on the University campus and in the larger community and/or delegated staff on the Center’s behalf
  • Coordinated fundraising and developed proposals for activities of the Center that occur over the above state funding
  • Provided academic leadership in the field of women’s studies by interacting with other faculty and students both on and off campus
  • Supervised program activities of the Center and initiated new programs and research
  • Initiated long-term planning, development and evaluation of programs to further the Center’s academic and research goals as well as service mission

Coordinator English Education
 
As Coordinator of English Education, I was responsible for all curriculum and instruction activities including planning, development and evaluation.  I initiated and maintained personal and written contacts with faculty in the department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Department of English.  As a graduate faculty member in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, I taught three courses per semester and chaired doctoral committees.

UTA Magazine

The last time a UTA school became a college, Richard Nixon was in the White House, M*A*S*H was a new show on TV, and the University had recently conferred its first doctoral degrees.

It was 1973, and the schools of Business, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Science had just elevated to college status—a milestone for an institution that was a junior college until 1959.

On Aug. 6, 2003, UTA added a fifth college when the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board boosted the status of the School of Education.


Education dean named outstanding alumna
Public Affairs

Jeanne Marcum Gerlach, Associate Vice President for K-16 Initiatives and Dean and Professor of the College of Education at The University of Texas at Arlington has been elected to receive one of the outstanding alumni awards at West Virginia University. Gerlach is the College of Human Resources and Education honoree and will be recognized on Saturday, May 15th at an evening celebration and on the following morning at graduation.


College prepares for national accreditation team

UTA’s College of Education could be the first in the system to be nationally accredited.

A team from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education will finish its visit next week. Elaine Wilmore, educational administration associate professor, said UTA should know the decision in a month.
