Description: Purpose. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) solicits grant applications from institutions/organizations to participate in a new NHLBI program on Functional Modeling of Pediatric Upper Airway Disorders. The objective is to identify the biological and structural components limiting airflow in congenital or acquired disorders of the pediatric upper airway (infant to adolescent). The ultimate goal is to develop novel approaches that will identify targets for intervention to correct obstruction of airflow through the upper airway. This program will require collaborations among experts in computational modeling (mathematicians/bioengineers) with clinician scientists (e.g. pulmonologists, otolaryngologists, craniofacial surgeons, and/or radiologists). Use of the multiple PI mechanism is encouraged. Only human studies will be supported. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the R01 grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NHLBI intends to commit approximately $5,000,000 total costs for FY2010. The total amount to be awarded for Functional Modeling of the Upper Airway Program will be a maximum of $20,000,000 total costs for the 4-year project period. It is anticipated that NHLBI will fund up to 5 research awards.
