Customizing your Avatar Look - Part I
The Components
- Shape - this is your avatar size and shape
- DIY, use one from the Library, or buy
- In your inventory, the Shape component will have this icon:

- A shape cannot be taken off. It can only be replaced by wearing a different shape.
- Skin - This is your skin tone, make up, and shading
- Use one from the Library or buy
- In your inventory, the Skin component will have this icon:

- A skin cannot be taken off. It can only be replaced by wearing a different skin.
- Hair
- Use one from the Library or buy
- There are two types of hair: Linden, or System, hair and "prim" hair
- In general, system hair is VERY difficult to make so it looks non-cartoonish.
- Prim hair will come with two parts: a "baldie" or "base" (which is made from the system hair component) and the hair itself. These generally are found together in a folder for that hair.
- The "baldie" or "base hair" is an essential component to wearing prim hair. This is what will hide your default system hair so that the prim hair looks the way it was intended.
- The base hair (or baldie) will have this icon:

- The hair itself is an object you wear and will have this icon:

- You can wear both the base and the prim hair at the same time by right-clicking on the folder that contains both and choosing "Add to Outfit" from the menu.
- Shoes
- Similarly with hair, there are two types of shoes: Linden, or system, shoes and "prim" shoes.
- System shoes are nearly impossible to make in a way that at all resembles footwear. Instead, like with hair, the system component is used as a shoe base or foot fitter. Unlike shape, skin, or hair base, this component can be taken off.
- Prim footwear (shoes, boots, etc) come with at least three parts: a shoe base (or foot fitter), and two objects: one for each foot. Boots may have an additional two parts: the upper, or calf, part for each leg.
- Like with hair, you can put all footwear components on at once by right-clicking the folder in your inventory that contains them and choosing "Add to outfit" from the menu.
- The shoe base will have this icon:

- The other shoe components are objects and have this icon:

- Clothing
- DIY with caution or buy
