Welcome to the Sociology Program Sociology encourages you to examine how social forces influence all aspects of your life. The type of job you hold, the amount and type of education you receive, when and whom you marry, how you raise your children, and even your religious and political beliefs are all influenced by social phenomena. Sociology is designed to uncover and investigate these phenomena and the effects they have on behavior. Degree Options The Sociology Program in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Sociology. What Can You Do With a Sociology Degree? Sociology prepares students for a wide range of careers in business and industry, government, education and social service agencies. Many positions for sociology majors involve research. Surveys have shown that sociology students earning a baccalaureate degree in Sociology are employed to conduct research for a variety of organizations such as: city government, public housing agencies, marketing firms, hospitals, mental health centers, police departments, and the media. Sociologists are often employed in industry, advertising, public relations, human resources, and labor-management relations. Examples of specific occupations held by sociology majors include: human resources manager, public relations expert, organizational analyst, health care administrator, educational counselor, health care counselor, city planner and teacher. See the following web pages for additional information: Student Organizations The department sponsors the Sociology Student Association (SSA), which is open to all students, and the UTA chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), the international sociology honor society. Financial Aid Many sources of financial aid are available to UTA students. Any interested student should apply for assistance each year, as eligibility can vary from one year to the next.
