The program leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work with a specialization in International Comparative Social Welfare Policy covers six semesters (three years) of full-time study and requires the completion of 54 hours of graduate study.
Required Courses
The first 24 hours are required core courses and must be completed during the first year at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. The next 21 hours must be completed by the students during their second year at The University of Texas at Arlington.

Core Comprehensive Examinations
At the end of the first year, the Core Comprehensive Examinations are taken. Questions are set in each of the areas of the core courses. Satisfactory completion of the Core Comprehensives at the end of the first year, along with receiving a positive diagnostic evaluation, qualifies students to proceed in the program. Comprehensive examinations are administered and graded by the UANL faculty.
The Specialty Comprehensive Examination
After successful completion of 45 credit hours, the Specialty Examination is taken. This examination is set and graded by the student’s Advisory Committee at UT Arlington. Upon successful completion of this examination, the student may apply for candidacy. Once candidacy has been approved by the Graduate School, the student may register for dissertation hours.
PhD Elective Courses
Students may select from the following designated doctoral level electives or from any 6000 level master’s courses in the School of Social Work or courses in other departments at UT Arlington.
Dissertation (minimum of 9 hours)
Students are expected to enroll for a minimum of 3 hours per semester while working on their dissertation. Students are required to be enrolled for a minimum of 9 hours dissertation in the semester in which they graduate. Students can register for the last 9 dissertation hours at either UT Arlington or UANL. See the Graduate Catalog for requirements for the Dissertation Committee. It is required by the School of Social Work that dissertation committees include at least one member from another academic department.
