My name is Sherry Williams, and I will soon complete my first year in the UT Arlington School of Social Work Graduate Program. My motivation for becoming a social worker was ignited after my husband suffered a terrible back injury. Chronic pain negatively impacted all aspects of his life: physically, emotionally, financially, and socially. From this experience, I was empowered to help not only my husband but also others who suffer from chronic pain or other chronic and terminal illnesses.

After completion of my undergraduate degree in psychology, it was apparent that I must continue my course of education in order to gain the skills and license needed to help people professionally. I began to research my educational options.

It soon became clear that in the social work profession I could use my personal experience and training as a Social Worker in a hospital setting working with those dealing with illness, disease and death. I also discovered that with the expanding senior population and as hospitals and insurance providers continue to limit the length of patients stay in the hospital, home health and hospice care is seeing an increase in demand for social workers.

The curriculum and excellent faculty in the UT Arlington School of Social Work are preparing me to develop the skills and ethics to work in the complex and changing health care system. This program is providing the platform to reach a group of individuals and families I would not have the opportunity to reach without the appropriate education.

Hope to see you on campus soon!
