Social work dean named ACE fellow


Scott Ryan, dean of the School of Social Work, was named an American Council on Education fellow this week. Dr. Ryan was nominated by President James D. Spaniolo for the program and joins 56 other fellows for the 2012-13 academic year

"I am honored by President Spaniolo’s nomination and for the invitation from the ACE Fellows Program,” says Ryan, Jenkins Garrett Professor of Social Work. “I especially look forward to spending the next academic year working with the leadership at host universities to learn about issues President Spaniolo and I will identify this summer"

The ACE Fellows Program was established in 1965 and is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing promising senior faculty and administrators for senior positions in
college and university administration.

John Buckwalter, associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Education and Health Professions, has been assigned to Texas Christian University this year as an ACE fellow.

Veterans Day Event a Huge Success



What a success we had with our first Student Relations Committee Event! As a result of the hard work of this committee we filled an entire SUV with donations and delivered them last Thursday to the MAC, in time for veterans day. The donations included 66 bags of items and $337 in cash gifts.

Lashaunn Bold's SOCW 5306 class earned the winning 215 points!


Alumnus Killed in Action in Kabul



We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of one of our MSSW graduates. Our thoughts and good will go to the family of Lt. Col. David Cabrera.

Lt. Col. David E. Cabrera was among those killed when a "suicide bomber rammed an armored bus ":http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/30/world/asia/deadly-attack-strikes-nato-bus-in-kabul.html?_r=2 in the Afghan capital of Kabul on Saturday October 29, 2011. Cabrera earned a MSSW degree from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1994 and joined the U.S. Army as a medical service corps officer in Jan. 1996.

At the time of his death, Cabrera was a clinical social worker with the Army’s Medical Service Corps and the director of social work at USU. As an assistant professor in the university’s Department of Family Medicine, he saw patients, taught military medical students, conducted research on post-traumatic stress disorder and post-traumatic growth, and participated in university field training exercises.

He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel at a small ceremony on September 1, surrounded by his family, friends, and close colleagues. On Sept. 30, Cabrera left the U.S. for Afghanistan. He had been in the country less than a month when he was killed on October 29.

He leaves behind a wife and four children.
