#SFT 1129 Narratives and Solutions for Families
Struggling with Substance Use
Instructor—Blaine F. Moore, MSSW, LCSW
One of the habits of highly effective problems such as substance use/abuse/misuse in a family is to trick everyone into believing that one person in the family is the “problem”. Once the family is tricked by the problem, an illusion is created and the diagnosis of the “problem person” which many times lead to flat and linear “interventions” through confrontation and education. Using Solution Focused and Narrative practices, this seminar will explore ways to invite the family to collaborate and work systematically to take a stand against the “problem” not the person.

#0918 Child Custody Evaluation Issues For The
Lone Star State: Probate Social Studies For Adoption And Contested Cases
Instructor—Aaron Robb, M.Ed., NCC, LPC-S
Over the last decade Texas jurisprudence has caught up with the ever-growing body of research regarding child custody issues and the professional consensus on best practices for mental health professionals making recommendations to the courts. This is a highly specialized area where even experienced professionals may find themselves inadvertently blurring professional boundaries and crossing over from therapeutic or social service rolls into the forensic arena. It can also be a highly stimulating and rewarding area of practice for those who can make the mental shift to the strictures of the forensic realm. This seminar outlines current legal and professional standards and provides an overview of how non-forensic practitioners can set clear boundaries for themselves and their clients in order to minimize risk of ethical transgressions.

Ethics: Reporting, Recording, Risk
Management, and Reconciling the Options
Instructor—Thomas L. Hartsell Jr., J.D., Attorney at Law
Absolute confidentiality is a myth. Certain events must ethically and legally be reported. Do you know what, when, to whom, and how to report? How to respond to a subpoena? What to include and how to document a file? You must consider reporting child abuse, elder abuse, abuse of the physically or mentally handicapped, abuse of inpatients, an unethical colleague and many other situations covered in this seminar. Receive information on reporting your own ethical violations to the licensing board, insurance carriers, hospitals when seeking a job or completing an application, etc. Confidentiality is compromised in all these situations. The handout will include relevant statutes and legal and ethical guidelines.

Ethical Issues for Social Workers in Child
Welfare Practice
Instructor—Vicky Hina, LMSW, MSSW, BA
Conducting ourselves in an ethical manner sounds obvious and reasonable, but social workers often find themselves in ethical dilemmas in the work environment. Perhaps our personal values conflict with our agency policy or perhaps we don’t even realize something is against the Code of Ethics. Knowing your professional code of ethics is just a first step in sound ethical practice. We will review and discuss situations of unethical behavior including issues of boundaries, sexual harassment and cultural responsiveness. Comparing the NASW Code of Ethics to other professional codes, we will list and understand the similarities among helping professions. Provoking thought and discussing actions, this seminar will leave you better prepared to recognize and respond to ethical dilemmas in your profession.

#0922 Adult Sex Offenders: Intervention
Strategies in REBT
Instructor—Jorge Medina, MSSW, LMSW, ASOTP
This seminar is designed to help therapists working with sex
offenders or other resistant client groups gain knowledge of Albert
Ellis’ Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. REBT is a clear-cut theory of
personality disturbance or human “demandingness” which hypothesizes that
various people so not get upset so much by external forces, rather, they
largely upset themselves by insisting that they should be
unconditionally loved; that other people should be incredibly fair to
them; and that the world should be exceptionally easy and overgenerous
toward them. This seminar will help clinicians identify clients’ schemas
or demands which are the main cause of clients’ emotional disturbances.
By learning and employing strategies in REBT, clinicians will be in a
better position to help clients develop insights into the nature of
their own thinking and feelings, thereby promoting emotional and
behavioral change.

#0927 What's Your Story? An Introduction to Narrative
Therapy
Instructor—Robin Dickey, MA, LPCi
This interactive seminar provides an introduction and overview
of Narrative Therapy as it is practiced and applicable in counseling
sessions today. You will leave with an understanding of Narrative
Therapy, the techniques utilized in the therapy sessions, as well as the
tools available for visual interaction with clients. You will be
given the opportunity to participate in mock-therapy sessions to see how
this therapeutic process works and how the tools allow clients to
visualize the effects of the identified problem on their lives in an
extrinsic manner. This seminar outlines how a therapist
collaborates with their clients to identify strengths, values, and
beliefs as opposing forces against the problem, and the unwanted effects
of that problem. You will be able to better understand the
post-constructivist viewpoint of Narrative Therapy, which assumes the
client is not the problem, the problem is the problem.

#MIL 5005 Prolonged Exposure and
Cognitive Restructuring Therapy Skills Practicum I
Instructor—Jose Carbajal, MSW/MTS, LCSW
This seminar is designed for social workers at all levels of experience and across practice levels and settings. The focus is on demonstration and skills rehearsal of specific cognitive-behavioral intervention techniques to treat people with PTSD. The evidence suggests that the active element of these techniques is in vivo or imaginal prolonged exposure, with efficacy found for a number of methodologies in which the exposure may be embedded and the following habituation sessions for each traumatic event may be conducted. Therefore, this seminar will be interactive to ensure the core techniques, as well as variant methodologies in which they are embedded, are correctly applied. The seminar will be conducted as an introductory skills lab in the application of these interventions.

techniques are correctly applied. Participants are required to bring (or
submit online) videotape(s) of a prolonged exposure therapy session (s)
they have conducted with a live or simulated client with all identifying
information redacted. This seminar will be devoted to coaching in
refining the prolonged exposure and associated CBT intervention
techniques, with particular attention to the application of cognitive
restricting and processing techniques which are used in sessions
following completed prolonged exposure treatment of a single trauma
episode. Time permitting, topics of atypical case presentations and

#MIL 5009 Art Therapy for Survivors of
Trauma and Disaster
Instructor—Linda L. McCarley, MSSW, LCSW, ATR-BC, RPT-S
This experiential and didactic seminar provides art therapy
training to mental health professionals who work with survivors of
trauma and disasters. Participants will learn how art therapy techniques
can be utilized for effectively treating those who suffer from
post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, dissociation,
nightmares or an overwhelming sense of grief and loss. For children, art
making is the most natural way to communicate overwhelming experiences,
and for people it can be a way to express that which cannot be
adequately conveyed with words. Art expression is a universal language
and has the ability to cross the barriers of all languages and cultures
to communicate painful and traumatic experiences to others. Participants
will also learn how to use art making to protect themselves from
secondary trauma and burnout. Presentation format includes lecture, case
presentation, discussion, experiential art making, and group processes.

#MIL 5012
Sexual Assault: The "Silent Crime"
Instructors—Ellen J. Elliston, Ph.D., LCSW, CDVC
The U.S. has the highest reported sexual assault rate of any
country that reports such information and these numbers only represent a
small portion of the sexual assaults that occur. In the U.S., sexual
assault has been called “the silent crime” because a large majority of
the sexual assaults go unreported. Why does this happen? Why are
victims so hesitant to speak out? What can be done to help these silent
victims? In this seminar you will examine the ethical issues inherent in
interventions with sexual assault victims, and the myths and realities
of sexual assault that affect cultural attitude. Information based on
research and clinical practice will be presented to help understand why
victims choose not to tell about their victimization. You will
examine the many emotional responses of victims including humiliation,
self-doubt, shame and self-blame and learn methods of effective and
ethical intervention. The differences in victimization in the military
versus civilian life will be discussed including the unique work
environment created by military service and how rank and power plays a
part in the occurrence and response to assault.
