#0932    Giving Till It Hurts: Ethical Concerns in the Counseling Relationship
Instructor—Ellen J. Elliston, Ph.D., LCSW, CDVC

Many social workers, counselors and other social services professionals face increasing ethical challenges in today’s world. Clients face more social stress than ever before, resources are limited and agencies are being forced to cut services. All of these factors affect our clients, but they also affect the professional worker or counselor. We are forced to provide ethical, quality care in a more limited amount of time than we once had. Many questions come up with professionals about how to work ethically, and yet cost-effectively, within the intimate setting that must be established in order to provide effective counseling or intervention. We have to establish trust and rapport quickly while setting and maintaining appropriate boundaries. Shorter interventions call for different skills than we once were able to use. Because of the increasing stress, some workers and counselors burn out and leave direct care. You will explore the increasing challenges, focusing on the ethical challenges that arise. The instructor will present information for discussion and participants will explore the issues through audience participation and small group discussions. The closing discussion will help you learn how to work effectively to prevent burnout.

#0942    Advocate or Friend? The Ethical Challenges of Working with Victimized Clients
Instructor—Ellen J. Elliston, Ph.D., LCSW, CDVC

Regardless of where we practice, most social workers/counselors will work with clients who have been victimized in some way. The clients may have suffered abuse as a child or lived in a house with chaos and violence. Some could have been directly abused through domestic violence and/or sexual assault. Or perhaps they have been the non-abusive parent in cases of child abuse. Working with victims requires specialized skills, strong professional and personal boundaries, and a clear understanding of what role the social worker/counselor plays in the treatment of the client. These types of cases test our ethical standards and practices. It sometimes becomes difficult to determine what role we play with the victim – advocate or friend. In this seminar you will learn how to assess your own values and beliefs about victims through personal assessment and small group discussion. Learn how to identify possible ethical challenges, how to approach an ethical dilemma, and ways to establish and maintain strong boundaries. Presentation format includes lecture, PowerPoint, and group discussion.
