2. Please notice the NEW requirement as of September 1, 2006: Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners Jurisprudence Exam
- This examination is designed to be primarily an instructional training course that meets the jurisprudence examination requirement for new licenses mandated by the Texas Legislature, secondary to findings and recommendations of the Sunset Commission.
- Requires applicants to pass a jurisprudence exam as a condition of licensure. The requirement to pass the jurisprudence exam would apply to individuals who apply for licensure on or after September 1, 2006; individuals licensed before then would be exempt from passing the jurisprudence exam. You must pass this exam prior to applying to take the State Licensing Exam.
- Anyone wishing to renew a license after 12-31-08 would also be required to have passed the jurisprudence exam. If you already have a social work license and decide to take the jurisprudence exam, you will receive 3 CEU’s towards ethics. (No CEU’s are awarded to new applicants for taking the jurisprudence exam)
- You can study social work licensing laws and rules by visiting: http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/socialwork/sw_forms.shtm.
3. File your license application with the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners in order to get permission to take the exam. This can be done online (http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/socialwork/sw_aonline.shtm) or you can download a copy of the application from the site.
4. After getting the letter from the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners, you can now register with the ASWB to take the examination. The ASWB is a national organization that develops a standardized test for social workers that is used by state licensing agencies. Note: Filing with the state for the license does not register you to take the exam; you must contact ASWB. (The registration can be done online at http://www.aswb.org/Main/registeronline.asp, which requires a credit card for payment.)
5. You then contact the ACT Test Center of your choice from the list that you received from ASWB in order to schedule the exam. (Not all ACT Test Centers administer this test.) The packet of materials from ASWB provides more details about the test.
6. You will get an unofficial test score when you complete the test. The official test score is sent by ASWB to the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners. Getting this official score and having a final copy of your transcript are required before you will get your license. (Please be advised that there is a delay of 4-6 weeks between posted grades and posted official transcript which must be sent to the Social Work Board in Austin to receive a license. This further delays the issuing of a license. An option might be to apply for a temporary license when applying to take the licensing exam. This temporary license is good for 3 months and cannot be obtained after taking the licensing exam.)
7. Note for Veterans: You can receive reimbursement for licensing and certification tests you take on or after March 1, 2001. These tests must be specifically approved for the G.I. Bill. VA can pay only for the cost of the tests and not other fees connected with obtaining a license or certification. Please visit http://www.gibill.va.gov/pamphlets/lcweb.htm for more information.
