Mission
The mission of EXCEL Campus Activities is to promote campus and community involvement through collaborating to develop and expand cultural, educational, social, and traditional programs for the enrichment of student life.
History
EXCEL, in some form or fashion, has been around for longer than most of you have been walking on this planet. The former name of EXCEL was the Student Activities Board, lovingly known as SAB. SAB was divided into councils, similar to our individual committee structure. Each council was given a budget to program activities in their particular area within a given budget. The committees worked independently from one another so there was no General Body meeting. Therefore, there were fewer people and fewer opinions to decide on how that chunk of money was to be spent. The members of each particular council were aware of all of the activities sponsored by SAB, but took no ownership in assisting with one another’s programs.
The structure of SAB was changed to EX.C.E.L. in the fall of 1992 and a “star” was born. EX.C.E.L was an acronym for Excellence in Campus Traditions Entertainment and Arts and Leadership Development. Later the Leadership Development committee became the Lectures and Debates committee after the creation of the UTA Leadership Academy. At this time EX.C.E.L. also included a membership committee and a secretary position.
In the spring of 2007 EXCEL went through more changes. The Lectures and Debates committee was reformed into the Special Events committee allowing the committee to broaden its programming and work closely with other UTA organizations and departments. The secretary and membership director positions were also eliminated to make way for the new vice president’s position. Because the name ‘EXCEL’ had become so recognizable throughout the campus the organization kept the name and simply dropped the periods.
Although we have gone through some modifications, our purpose remains the same: work together as a team to provide quality programs for the campus and surrounding communities. The General Body meetings are designed to provide a diversity of opinions about each program that utilizes Student Service Fee monies. It is everyone’s responsibility to understand the purpose of each program and talk to fellow students in their classes, other organizations, residence halls, etc. to see if there is an interest or need for the program. The Committees’ job is to research proposed programs and coordinate the events. We encourage all members to actively participate in all event sponsored by EXCEL Campus Activities.
