SCHOLARSHIPS

The UTA Band Alumni Association currently offers two scholarships - both for upperclassmen involved in the UTA Band Program:

  1. the Susan E. Lichtenwalter Memorial Scholarship
  2. the UTA Band Alumni Scholarship

This year's Scholarship Audition date will be announced soon.

Application Materials will be posted online once the date is established.

SUSAN E. LICHTENWALTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Susan Lichtenwalter, the first wife of Director of Bands Ray C. Lichtenwalter, passed away in the spring of 1988 after battling cancer.  Susan was never officially employed by UTA but was closely associated with the UTA Band, especially its students.  She was always supportive of them, collectively and individually, and her love of music and its important place in her life was always an inspiration to them.

After her passing, the membership of the UTA Band Alumni agreed that an appropriate homage to her memory would be a scholarship that would assist one of the students Susan held so dear.  The scholarship would be awarded by audition/application, with musicianship as the central focus, but with other qualities and qualifications taken into account.  This was because Susan saw music not as an end unto itself, but as an important part of a "whole" person.

The scholarship began as a $1,000 award but has grown in amount as the cost of tuition and fees has risen over time.

  UTA BAND ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP

As the Association evolved entering the 20th century, its membership sought new goals and new projects by which to serve the UTA Band and its members.  The Susan E. Lichtenwalter Memorial Scholarship had begun to age, having entered its 15th year.  While it was still a viable and important award, the Association felt that something more would be appropriate given the growth of both the UTA Band Program and the Association itself.

The Executive Board at the time believed that a scholarship similar to the Susan Lichtenwalter scholarship would be feasible and appropriate, but it needed to take on a different focus.  A scholarship based on the Lichtenwalter scholarship would appear to be a "consolation" prize, and the members wanted this award to stand apart from--not behind--the Lichtenwalter scholarship.

Given the leadership role Alumni members have taken throughout the past, leadership seemed like the logical focus of choice.  The UTA Band Alumni Scholarship therefore requires an audition/application, but greater emphasis is placed on the leadership abilities displayed by the applicant.  The hope is that the ideal scholarship recipient could also become an ideal Band Alumni member.

This scholarship began also as a $1,000 award and will grow as the financial capabilities of the Association continue to grow.
