 Charles D. Spielberger, Ph.D., ABPP

           Charles D. Spielberger is Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Research in Behavioral Medicine and Health Psychology at the University of South Florida , where he has been a faculty member since 1972. He previously directed the USF Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, and was a tenured faculty member at Duke (1955-62), Vanderbilt (1963-66), and at Florida State University (1967-72), where he was also Director of Clinical Training.  A Diplomate in Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology and Distinguished Practitioner of the US National Academies of Practice, he served as a Training Specialist in Psychology (GS-15) at the National Institute of Mental Health (1965-67) and was a Research Fellow in 1979-80 and 1985-86 at The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study.

Author, co-author or editor of more than 350 professional publications, Spielbergers’s current research focuses on: anxiety, curiosity, depression, and the experience, expression and control of anger; job stress and stress management; and the effects of stress, emotions and lifestyle factors on the etiology and progression of hypertension, cardiovascular disorders and cancer.  His books include Anxiety and Behavior (1966); Contributions to General Psychology (1968); Anxiety and educational Achievement (1971); Anxiety: Current Trends in Theory and Research (1972); Cognitive and Affective Learning Strategies (1979); Police Selection and Evaluation (1979); Understanding Stress and Anxiety (1979); Anxiety in Sports (1988); Cross-Cultural Anxiety, Volumes 1-4 (1976-1990), with R. Diaz-Guerrero); Personality Assessment in America (1992); Test Anxiety: Theory, Assessment and Treatment (1995); and the continuing 17-volume research series on Stress and Emotion (1975-2004, with I. Sarason).

Spielberger’s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (1970, 1983), with translations in 66 languages and dialects, has become a standard international measure of anxiety.  He is also author of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (1973), Test Anxiety Inventory (1980), State-Trait Anger EXpression Inventory (1988, 1999), and the Job Stress Survey (1995, 1999).  His research contributions have been recognized in the awards he has received from the American Psychological Association (1993), the APA Divisions of Clinical, Community, and International Psychology, the Florida Psychological Association (1977, 1988), the Society for Personality Assessment (1990), and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the International STress and Anxiety Research Society (STAR, 1998).  He founded the American Journal of Community Psychology in 1971, serving as its editor for seven years, and currently serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology and the International Journal of Stress Management.  He was also Editor of the LEA series, Advances in Personality Assessment  (Vol. 1-10, 1982-95, with J. Butcher), and two continuing book series, Clinical and Community Psychology (with I. Sarason) and Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine.

During 1991-1992, Spielberger served as the 100th President of the American Psychological Association.  He was also President of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology. He also previously served as President of the Society for Personality Assessment, the Society for Test Anxiety Research, the International Council of Psychologists, the Southeastern Psychological Association, and three APA Divisions (Clinical, Community, and International Psychology). He is a Fellow of Sigma Xi, AAAS, the Society for Behavioral Medicine, and fourteen APA Divisions, and a member of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, the Psychonomic Society, the Society for Psychopsysiological Research, and the New York Academy of Science.
