GRADUATE STUDENT RECOGNITIONS

Each of the graduate student recipients was asked to reflect on professional goals and faculty members who have played important roles in the student’s academic success. The responses are summarized below.

Raman Adaikkalavan
Major: Computer Science and Engineering
Hometown: Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India

Raman comes from a family that has provided free education to poor students in rural India for more than six decades. Therefore, it is not surprising that he would like to become a teacher once he completes his doctoral degree in Computer Science and Engineering. He also intends to make a contribution to the advancement of information security, databases and pervasive computing during his career. Raman would like to thank Dr. Sharma Chakravarthy for helping him succeed.

Manu Aery
Major: Computer Science and Engineering

Manu would like to pursue a doctoral degree after graduation. He derives satisfaction from working towards and achieving research goals. He believes that science is a powerful means of improving the quality of life; therefore, he would like to continue his
research and apply innovative solutions to problems by balancing research and industry standards. Dr. Sharma Chakravarthy has guided him through his thesis. Without his foresight and encouragement, Manu’s thesis would only have remained a great idea.

Hitha Alex
Major: Computer Science and Engineering

Hitha’s professional goal is to pursue a career in research and teaching. She believes that teaching is the noblest profession because of the opportunity to influence so many lives. She hopes to make a significant contribution to her profession by actively performing research and seeking original solutions to problems. Hitha is one of only two students nominated to the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Program for the 2004-2005 academic year. Hitha recognizes Dr. Mohan Kumar, Dr. Behrooz Shirazi and Dr. Bob Weems for being important to her academic success.

VenuGopal Balijepally
Major: Information Systems

Nominated by: Information Systems and Operations Management
Upon completion of his Ph.D., VenuGopal would like to be a researcher and a teacher. As a researcher, he intends to explore the areas of technology and organizations. He hopes to reach a broad audience by publishing his findings. VenuGopal feels it is his duty to educate others by helping students achieve their goals. He was inducted into Phi Beta Delta Honor Society in spring 2004. Particularly important have been Dr. Radha Mahapatra, who is VenuGopal’s mentor, Dr. Sridhar Nerur, with whom he co-authored several articles, and Dr. James T. Teng, who helped VenuGopal understand the nuances of theory based research.

Lisa Helm Ballew
Major: Landscape Architecture
Hometown: Midland, Texas
Nominated by: Landscape Architecture
Lisa will complete her academic program in May and hopes to work in the Dallas area as a landscape architect. She would like to provide her clients good urban design, park design and residential landscape design so that they can enjoy the benefits of nature and reduce their daily stress. She is the recipient of three scholarships and has been a member of Sigma Lambda Alpha, Landscape Architecture Honor Society, since 2002. Lisa wishes to recognize Richard Ferrier and Sangwoo Lee for their contributions to her success. Particularly important in helping her achieve academic success is David Jones.

Kimberly Paige Bowers
Major: English

Kimberly’s goal is to be a university professor after she completes her degree in English. She has held a Graduate Teaching Fellowship since 2001. Faculty members who have played a role in her academic success include Dr. Stacy Alaimo, Dr. Tim Morris, Dr. Ken Roemer, Dr. Laurin Porter and Dr. Audrey Wick.

Wook Choi
Major: Computer Science and Engineering
Hometown: South Korea
Nominated by: Computer Science and Engineering
After graduation, Wook would like to continue working in the Computer Science and Engineering profession as a research investigator. This is his second time to be honored with the Who’s Who Among American Universities and College award. In 2002, Wook was honored with the Best Thesis Award from UTA. His master’s and Ph.D. supervisor, Dr. Sajal K. Das, has been an important influence in his career.

Carson Blaine Clanton
Major: Mathematics

Carson is proud to have been President of the UTA Mathematical Association of America, which was awarded the Outstanding Student Organization Award last spring. He would like to have a career in government or working in an industry solving math problems. He feels that he will always be a student even after graduation. Carson says UTA is a great source for those students seeking teachers that are not only good at teaching but who also care about their students. There are many people he would like to thank for helping him achieve success, but a few that are particularly important are Dr. Ira Berstein, Dr. James Kopp, Dr. Dan Levine, Dr. D. L. Hawkins, Dr. Danny Dyer, Dr. Minerva Cordero, Dr. Neal Smatresk and Cathy Boyles.

Kendall Ann Hasse
Major: Educational Leadership and Policy Studies
Hometown: Corpus Christi, Texas

Kendall is currently the Dallas Independent School District’s Teacher of the Year. She is a full time student and works 40+ hours a week. Her ambition is to be a “public school leader, motivator and innovator.” It is her wish to become a vice principal who supports teachers and gives students the opportunity to become leaders and achieve success. Individuals who have contributed to Kendall’s success are Dr. Nancy Hadaway, Dr. Jeannine Hirtle and Dr. Mary Lynn Crow.

Jennifer Lauren Hudson-Allen
Major: Transatlantic History
Hometown: Jamestown, New York
Nominated by: History
Jennifer’s primary goal is to “deliver excellent educational opportunities for students at the high school and university level.” She also intends to continue her research while teaching. Jennifer has been nominated twice for Disney’s Teacher of the Year Award. The entire History Department has contributed to Jennifer’s success; however, three professors that are special to her include Dr. Elisabeth Cawthon, Dr. Stanley Palmer and Dr. Richard Francaviglia. Jennifer feels these individuals are significant because they always put their students first.

Qingchun Jiang
Major: Computer Science and Engineering

Qingchun is the author of numerous published articles. His professional goal is to be a university professor who integrates research, teaching and service into his career. He would like to thank Dr. Sharma Chakravarthy and Mr. Mike O’Dell for their support and help.

Cynthia Lorraine Juby
Major: Social Work
Hometown: El Dorado, Kansas
Nominated by: School of Social Work
Cynthia plans to conduct research that will better social work policy and practices. She would like her work to be instrumental in developing programs that reduce child maltreatment and lessen the effects of poverty. She serves as a consultant for the Tarrant County Department of Human Services and is a committee member for the Department of Family and Protective Services Certification Committee. Faculty members who have been important to Cynthia’s academic success include Dr. Joan Rycraft and Dr. Maria Scannapieco. These women have supported Cynthia in her decisions and have been sources of good advice.

Meiling Li
Major: Applied Chemistry
Hometown: Zhangjikuo, China

Meiling loves science and is devoted to becoming a scientist. After completing her Ph.D. in Applied Chemistry, Meiling intends to spend her career diagnosing diseases and researching pharmaceuticals. While attending UTA, she has made numerous presentations and in 2002, received an award for excellent teaching. Two members of the faculty who have important to her career are Dr. Gary Kinsel and Dr. Richard Timmons of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department.

Haitao Lin
Major: Computer Science and Engineering
Hometown: Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China

Haitao would like to work at a university exploring wireless communication technology. He intends to spend his career mentoring graduate students, developing courses that reflect recent advances in wireless technology and participating in international conferences. Last year, Haitao was awarded the Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Award from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. In 2003, he became a University Scholar and the recipient of two fellowships. Faculty members that have been important to Haitao’s success as a researcher are Dr. Sajal Das and Mr. Kalyan Basu.

Nabeel Mandahawi
Major: Industrial Engineering

Nabeel believes that by teaching he will have a hand in shaping society. He intends to continue his research in the field of Industrial Engineering to assist organizations in increasing profits and reducing costs. In 2004, he chaired the first Industrial Engineering research conference at UTA. Nabeel is a member of several honor societies, currently serving as President of Alpha Pi Mu, Industrial Engineering Honor Society. He has also been nominated to the Chancellor’s List. Dr. Bonnie Boardman and Dr. Sheik Imrhan have been instrumental in Nabeel’s academic success.

Anurag Pandey
Major: Materials Science and Engineering

The two things Anurag enjoys the most are teaching and conducting research. After completing his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, he intends to give back to his community by teaching others. Anurag was recently invited to join Tau Beta Pi, Engineering Honor Society. During his time at UTA, there have been many faculty members who have influenced and shaped his career; however, Dr. Pranesh Aswath and Dr. G.C. Pandey have made the biggest impact on his academic career and his personal life.

Amit Ramesh Thakkar
Major: Electrical Engineering

After graduation, Amit would like to continue his education by pursuing a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. His professional goal is to become a professor at UTA. He has served as a mentor and tutor to undergraduate students through the Industrial Engineering and Electrical Engineering organization and Eta Kappa Nu, Electrical Engineering Honor Society. It is this experience that has had a profound impact on Amit’s success. Last year, he received the Academic Excellence Award and was recognized as a Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He would like to thank Dr. Raymond Shoults, Dr. William Dillon, Dr. Bernard Svihel and Dr. Saibun Tjuatja for their support, encouragement and guidance.

Amit Vasudevan
Major: Computer Science and Engineering

Amit would like to dedicate his life to research and academia. He hopes to become a professor studying the field of operating systems and systems programming. Amit has served as a teaching assistant at UTA and last year won the CSE Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. He feels that by teaching he is able to develop new ideas and strengthen his research. He would like to express gratitude to Dr. Ramesh Yerraballi for being a “great mentor, motivator and friend.”

Sriram Venkataramanan
Major: Aerospace Engineering

Nominated by: Aerospace Engineering
Sriram intends to contribute to the aerospace and control community by discovering new analytical techniques and novel solutions to problems that require practical implementation. He has already received several job offers from companies such as General Electric and Cessna Aircraft Company. In spring 2005, Sriram was offered a fellowship with the NcNair Scholars Program. Faculty members who have been particularly important to his academic success include Dr. Atilla Dogan, Dr. Frank Lewis and Dr. Kamesh Subbarao.

John Wheatley White

After graduation, John intends to teach History. He feels honored to have been nominated for Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Dr. Thomas Adam and Dr. Don Kyle have been tremendous influences on John’s academic success.

Chitra Yingvivatanapong
Major: Electrical Engineering
Hometown: Bangkok, Thailand
Nominated by: Electrical Engineering
Chitra’s professional goal is to develop tools and techniques for power systems in a deregulation environment and to assist power companies in reducing incidents and optimizing resources. Her research has included topics such as improving power quality, optimizing power generation and controlling wind generation. In spring 2004, she was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, Engineering Honor Society and has volunteered at the Arlington Life Shelter, teaching adults how to use Microsoft Office. Dr. Wei-Jen Lee, Director of the Energy Systems Research Center, has been Chitra’s academic advisor for four years. He has been very influential and supportive of her academic success.

Gregory Michael Youngblood
Major: Computer Science and Engineering
Hometown: Bishop, Texas

Michael’s wish is to “help educate and inspire the next generation of computer science and electronic engineers.” He intends to complete his dissertation and attain a position as an assistant professor. His areas of interest include artificial intelligence, machine learning, intelligent environment and autonomous systems. He aspires to become a full professor with a “track record of strong, consistent and useful scientific discoveries that will improve the human condition.” The following are members of the faculty and staff at UTA who have been helpful to his academic success: Dr. Larry Holder, Dr. Diane Cook, Dr. Manfred Huber, Dr. Farhad Kamangar and Dr. Lynn Peterson.

Ugur Zengin
Major: Aerospace Engineering

As an Aerospace Engineer, Ugar would like to conduct research in the area of control system theory, intelligent control and mission planning of unmanned air vehicles. He recognizes Dr. Atilla Dogan and Dr. Kamesh Subbarao.

UNDERGRADUATE RECOGNITIONS

Each undergraduate recipient was asked to discuss the leadership experience that taught him or her the most valuable lesson and to name the faculty and staff members who have been particularly instrumental in helping the student to achieve success at UTA.

Joleen Liz Abarca
Major: Chemistry
Hometown: White Settlement, Texas
Nominating Departments: Chemistry and Biology
Joleen believes her experience as a Chemistry tutor has not only helped her become a better student but has also given her opportunity to influence others to do well in their studies. She has tutored Chemistry to freshmen and volunteered to teach elementary students about Chemistry through magic. Joleen has been on the National Dean’s List since 2001, is the recipient of the 2003-2004 College of Science Award, and is an elected member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She has served as a member and President of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Society and is a member of the American Chemical Society. She credits Dr. Richard Timmons for teaching her that she can achieve anything that she sets her mind to.

Nitin Jayant Bhatia
Major: Information Systems

Nitin is the recipient of several scholarships such as the Honors Presidential Scholarship and the Dean Barros Scholarship. Being a leader has given Nitin the insight to set and prioritize goals for his future. He would like to thank all the faculty, staff and students he has worked with while attending UTA. He has served in numerous leadership positions such as President of the Business Constituency Council, President, Webmaster and Treasurer of the Association of Information Technology Professionals and Business Senator for Student Congress. These leadership experiences have given him some invaluable qualities which he will “treasure throughout his life.”

John Robert Biggan
Major: Psychology

Before attending UTA, John held many leadership positions; however, his experience at UTA has taught him about diversity. This perspective helped John in broadening his thinking when it came to writing papers, learning new subjects and pursuing new projects. John has been very active in his fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, by serving as Risk Management Officer, Sergeant at Arms, Scholarship Committee Chair and TAUCTION Chair. He has also served with EX.C.E.L and the Trinity Hall Council. His community service accomplishments include serving as Make-Up Designer and Crew Chief for the Starlights Performing Arts Theater and School’s production of Monster in the Closet. He has also volunteered for Cub Scout Day Camp and Boo at the Zoo. John believes that by leading you have the opportunity to teach others and his life’s ambition is to teach. Geoffrey Weldon Burnham
Major: Biology

The greatest lesson Geoffrey has learned is to be dedicated. He is very active at UTA and in the community. He is involved in the Science Constituency Council (serving as President), UTA HOSTS! and the Medical and Dental Preparatory Association. He is a volunteer at Parkland Memorial Hospital helping in the emergency room by making beds, delivering samples and assisting patients. His many honors include the UTA Freshman Achievement Scholarship, the UTA College of Science Academic Achievement Award, the Science Constituency Council Outstanding Officer Award and membership in numerous academic honor societies. This is his second year to receive a Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges award. Faculty and staff who have been important to him are Dr. David Bernard, Cathy Pritchett, Dr. Valerie Reyna, Lori Norris, Pat Madison, Mary Jane Goad, Dr. Paul Medley, and Kim Bell.

Melaina Dawn Clark
Major: Industrial Engineering

In spring 2004, while serving as President of the Student Chapter of Institute of the Industrial Engineers, Melaina received a leadership award as a result of the Chapter’s receiving Gold Status. During the same semester, she also was named to the President’s Honor Roll. Melaina enjoys encouraging young girls to become engineers. This experience has increased her love for and dedication to learning. She has been very active in the Institute for Industrial Engineers serving as President from May 2002 to August 2004. Her role models are Dr. Bonnie Boardman and Dr. Jamie Rogers because of their classroom professionalism, teaching skills and guidance. Their knowledge of engineering as well as their trials and tribulations are inspiring to others.

Summer Michele Clark
Major: Nursing

Summer spends time reviewing material from previous classes in order to help her teach other students. She also knows that by being able to put something into her own words, she has truly learned the material and will be able to give her patients the best possible care when she passes the NCLEX. She serves as a mentor for the UTA School of Nursing and earned an award for Outstanding Clinical Performance in spring 2004. The entire School of Nursing staff is important to Summer because they are extremely helpful and encourage all of their students to succeed.

Sarah Kathleen Cole
Major: Biology and Chemistry
Hometown: Carrollton, Texas

Sarah’s motto: “Great leaders have qualities that cause people to follow.” Therefore, Sarah chooses to lead by example and give her peers something to emulate. She believes that “being a student means taking the initiative to lead yourself to succeed.” Sarah has succeeded in and out of the classroom. She has received various scholarships and awards including the UTA Outstanding Freshman Scholarship for three consecutive years as well as the UTA President’s Outstanding Achievement Award four times and the College of Science Academic Excellence Award four times. She is also a member of many honor societies. Sarah enjoys being a part of the UTA Marching Band/Concert Band. Particularly important to her success at UTA is Mr. Phillip L. Clements, Interim Director of Bands. He gave Sarah the opportunity to demonstrate her leadership skills even though she was not a music major. Experiences as a member of Tau Beta Sigma and Uniform Manager have taught her humility, patience and communication.

Amy Elizabeth Cotter
Major: Finance
Hometown: Simi Valley, California

In December 2004, Amy graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Finance. Through her leadership experiences, Amy has learned preparation, patience and a solid work ethic are important to success. Serving as a Supplemental Instructor (SI) for Student Support Services since August 2002, she strives to make her SI sessions fun and exciting so that everyone is relaxed. Since 2002, she has received the Outstanding Transfer Scholarship and been a member of the Distinguished Honor Roll. The four most influential faculty members who assisted Amy while at UTA are Dr. Gary Lacefield, Dr. Grace Esimai, Dr. Vincent Apilado and Professor Kathy Kelly.

Kan’Dace Len Council
Major: Sociology and Social Work
Hometown: San Antonio, Texas

As a member of the UTA Track and Field Team, Kan’Dace received the Scholar-Athlete Award. She has served on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, the President’s Advisory Council and the Intercollegiate Compliance Council. She is a member of the NAACP, BSA, NACWC, SOAR and UTA HOSTS!. Kan’Dace’s out-of-class experiences have given her the confidence to speak up in the classroom. She would like to thank Mr. Gregg Williams and Mrs. Janice Tamplin (SOAR) for helping her to acquire funding to continue her education and showing her all the resources available to her at UTA. Also, she is indebted to Dr. Deborah Johnson-Evans, Professor of English, for never allowing her to settle for a “B” and showing her that writing is a form of expression and that as long as she was passionate, she could soar to new heights. All of the aforementioned individuals have been an inspiration to Kan’Dace. She would like to thank each and every one of them.

Vrajesh Davé
Major: Computer Science and Engineering

Vrajesh completed his Bachelor’s in Computer Science and Engineering in fall 2004. He was the recipient of several scholarships including the Honors Presidential Scholarship and the Sabre Holdings Student Leader Scholarship. He was elected by his peers as “Mr. Engineering” in 2003. Under his leadership as the President of the Association for Computing Machinery/Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Computer Society, this organization won the UTA Outstanding Student Organization Award. From this experience, Vrajesh learned that it takes a lot of planning, responsibility and teamwork to achieve such recognition. Important to his success at UTA are Dr. Manfred Huber and Mr. Tom Rethard. “Both have a unique way of encouraging me and guiding me to the right direction.”

Terri Lynne Finney
Major: Nursing
Hometown: Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

The greatest thing Terri has learned is the importance of teamwork. She strives to help others by mentoring in the Nursing Student Learning Center and volunteering at the Arlington Women’s Shelter and Boy Scouts of America. In May 2004, Terri received Clinical Awards for Nursing for Adults and Health Promotion and Illness Prevention across the Lifespan and the Nursing Constituency Council Peer Award. In fall 2004, she won the Clinical Award for Pediatric Nursing. She has also received the Dream Makers Scholarship and the U.S. Health and Human Resources Nursing Scholarship. Terri would like to recognize Alean Royes for establishing the Nursing Learning Resource Center (LRC) and Dee Dee Freeman for creating a great place where students feel “welcomed and supported” when they come into the LRC.

Natalie Shae Freeman
Major: Broadcast Communications
Hometown: Duncanville, Texas

Natalie completed her degree in Broadcast Communications in December 2004. She has received several scholarships and won the Zeta Phi Beta Finer Womanhood Award and Alpha Phi Alpha’s Most Deserving Woman Award. By being President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Community Service Chair for Alpha Kappa Alpha and Student Affairs Chair for the Black Students Association, Natalie has learned that each person is his/her own responsibility and sometimes as the leader you have to “carry a load by yourself.” These lessons have helped her in the classroom by giving her the initiative to take risks. Faculty and staff that she considers important to her success are Fred Henry, Carter Bedford and Dr. Andrew Clark.

Tracy Annette Fulmer
Major: Marketing

Tracy’s experience in Dr. Kent Gardner’s leadership class gave her the confidence to become the charter President for Alpha Lambda Delta, a first-year student honor society. She is the recipient of the Outstanding Freshman Scholarship and has been nominated for Outstanding Student Leader. Tracy credits Dr. Gardner and Dr. Austin Lane for her success at UTA.

Leonardo Armando Garcia
Major: International Business-Spanish

Leonardo has been very active at UTA by serving as President of Delta Alpha Omega and Recruitment Chair for the Association of Mexican American Students. He has been selected as a University Scholar, McNair Scholar and is a member of several honor societies. This is his third consecutive year to receive the Who’s Who award. His accomplishments extend outside of the classroom to the community. He serves as the Student Director of Volunteers for Maestros de La Comunidad, organizer and mentor for the Hispanic Youth Conference, and is the author of a health guide that provides services for underprivileged Latino immigrants. Individuals that have played a significant role in Leonardo’s success include Dr. Robert Sonora, Dr. Matthew Cypher, Dr. Steven Culbert, Dr. Alejandro del Carmen, Jaime Nisttahuz, Dr. Roberto Trevino, Dr. Christian Zlolniski, Dr. Garcia y Griego, Dr. Joan Reinhardt, Sara Skiles du Toit, Dr. Rebecca Deen, Dr. Timothy Morris, Dr. Porter and James Jones.

Danielle Marie Georgiou
Major: International Business/French

Danielle has developed her listening, communication and interpersonal skills through her work as a choreographer for the UTA Dance Ensemble. She recently has been accepted into the Goolsby Leadership Academy. She is a member of Delta Sigma Pi, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Honors College. Danielle has reached out into the community as a tutor for Mission Arlington. Faculty and staff members who have been important to her include Jamie McCann, Andrew Quicksall, Dr. Karl Petruso and Marilyn Macik-Frey.

Justin Aubrey Gerstenberger

As a member of several student organizations, Justin has learned the importance of teamwork in and out of the classroom. He has been an Orientation Leader for two years, helping new students and parents learn about UTA. Through his leadership and outstanding service to UTA HOSTS!, Justin earned a scholarship in spring 2004. He has identified Ms. Gayonne Quick as his mentor. She has assisted Justin with setting and achieving his goals. He feels that he will never be able to repay her for all the guidance and wisdom she has given to him.

Denis Gjoni

This is Denis’s third time to be a member of Who’s Who. He has also been awarded several scholarships such as the Outstanding Transfer Student Scholarship and the Volunteer Leadership Scholarship. He is a University Scholar and the recipient of the Transfer Achievement Award. His out-of-class experiences have helped him become more organized by learning time management and working under stress and deadlines. He is currently a Senator for Student Congress, Member-At-Large for the Honors College Council and Advisor to Freshman Leaders on Campus. Marshall Logan Gray

As a leader in the Corps of Cadets at UTA, Marshall has learned that people often model their behavior after others. Therefore, Marshall tries to “lead a life defined by unquestionable integrity, character and class.” He is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships including the Professor of Military Sciences Cadet Achievement Award and Ribbon which is given to the top junior level cadet each year. He has also won the American Foreign Legion Scholastic Excellence Medal and Ribbon, for the North Texas Region. Major Kevin Smith and Captain Joel Coleman of Military Science have gone above and beyond their required responsibilities to ensure Marshall’s success. “They have served as fine mentors during my time here at UTA and continue to uphold that role for all cadets who pass through the ROTC program.”

Bonnie’s experience as a student leader has not only helped her in the classroom but also has prepared her for life after UTA. As an Aerospace Engineering and Mathematics major, Hisashi has won numerous awards and scholarships. He is the recipient of the Texas Space Grant Consortium Awards Columbia Crew Memorial Scholarship, the Honors College Presidential Scholarship and the Aerospace Engineering Outstanding Junior Award. As a member of several organizations, he believes that accomplishing a goal as a team is much more rewarding than doing something alone. Linda Ann Johnson

Linda has learned from her experiences the importance of listening to other points of view before making a decision and that respect must be given before it is received. A volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America and the Arlington Independent School District, Linda has maintained a high grade point average. She has won six scholarships including one from Phi Theta Kappa and the Bill Ross Endowed Scholarship from the Department of Accounting.

Jordan Mitchell Krantz

Jordan has been Captain of the UTA Men’s Golf Team since 2002. Through his leadership experiences, he has learned that with “commitment and hard work almost any goal is attainable.” He is the winner of the 2004 UTA Male Student Athlete of the Year Award and is a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Athletics Compliance Committee and the Southland Conference Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Jordan spent last summer serving as a volunteer coach for the Manitoba Golf Association Rural Junior Golf Camp. His golf coach, Jay Reyes, has been very important to his success.

Briana has held various leadership positions at UTA and within Delta Delta Delta. Last semester, she served as President of Panhellenic, Vice President of Membership for the Order of Omega, and was a member of several other organizations. This is her second year to win the Who’s Who award. Through these experiences, she has learned “self discipline and a strong work ethic.” Without these traits, Briana feels she would not have been successful academically. Melissa Denise Marek

As a member of the UTA Volleyball Team, Melissa finds time between athletics and academics to volunteer her time outside of the classroom. She reads to elementary school students once a week at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church and is a peer mentor for Texans Standing Tall, a program that provides alcohol awareness for high school students. By being involved in extracurricular activities, Melissa has obtained the confidence in group settings to take charge to ensure the success of the group. Her former academic advisor, Dr. Galen Carpenter, has been a part of Melissa’s success at UTA. He has assisted her in making important decisions in and out of the classroom.

Maria Guadalupe Muñoz

John Thanh Cong Nguyen

John graduated in December 2004, with a degree in Biology. He was active in organizations such as the Science Constituency Council and the Biochemistry and Chemistry Society. He also served as a Supplemental Instructor. However, it is his work with the Lien Hoa Monastery Youth Group that has influenced him as a leader. He is a counselor for the youth program and serves as a role model for children who otherwise might not have an adult figure in their lives. This experience has helped John recognize the importance of responsibility. Dr. David Bernard has been very influential to his success at UTA.

Oby Ugochi Obiyo

During her tenure at UTA, Oby has been a member of several student organizations. As a member of the Accounting Society, she served as Vice President of Finance for two years. She was named in 2004 to the Golden Key International Honour Society, where she served on the membership committee. Oby has been awarded Outstanding Committee Member from the African Student Organization twice. She has participated in many community service projects such as Relay for Life, Cook’s Children Hospital and Mission Arlington. She has learned that as a leader you must be able to delegate, be goal oriented and treat everyone fairly. As a recipient of numerous scholarships, Stephen has maintained an outstanding academic record at UTA. He is a University Scholar and member of Tau Beta Pi, Engineering Honor Society, and President of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, Computer Science Honor Society. He is also the Webmaster and member of the executive board for the Honors College Council and Vice President for the University Catholic Community. For two years, Stephen has participated as a volunteer for a robot programming contest for high school students. As a leader in student organizations, Stephen sets clear goals to make certain groups are doing well. He also uses this strategy in the classroom by setting long-term and short-term goals to ensure that he is able to master the material and integrate it with his other experiences. His mentor is Dr. Mostafa Ghandehari.

Paul Thomas Kent O’Neal

Paul is a founding member of the Mathematical Association of America and is currently the vice president of the organization. He is also a member of Pi Mu Epsilon, Mathematics Honor Society, and Mu Sigma, Microbiology Honor Society. Since fall 2001, Paul has been on the Dean’s List and has won the Outstanding Math Senior Award twice. His leadership experiences have taught him the value of personal responsibility and accountability. Dr. Minerva Cordero has been an important influence by motivating Paul to be a successful student.

Being Vice President of the Pre-Pharmacy Association has assisted Kunal in developing leadership qualities that will be important to him as a pharmacist. Since 2003, Kunal has mentored new UTA students through the UTA HOSTS! program and has been a member of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Tia DaNell Peasner

Tia is a recent graduate of UTA and a three-time recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award. She served as a founding member and Executive Director for Students for the Second Amendment until May 2004. She was also very active in Sigma Tau Delta, English Honor Society, and Olympus Mons, holding offices in both organizations. Tia has participated in several community organizations such as the Dallas County Republican Victory Center and the Republican Party. She feels that her experiences have taught her how to be resourceful and turn a negative situation into a positive one. She owes her success at UTA to four faculty members: Dr. Eric Bolsterli, for his helpful advice; Dr. Elizabeth Cawthon, for her inspiration; and Dr. Dora Musielak and Bruce Vitellaro, for taking a chance on her. Tiffany J. Powell

Tiffany is the recipient of various scholarships including the Mary I. Gourley Scholarship, Dean of Social Work Scholarship and the UTA Alumni Association Scholarship. She is also a University Scholar, McNair Scholar and a McNair Research Fellow. In 2004, she won the ACES Award for Social Work. While accomplishing all of these academic achievements, she finds time to mentor and tutor children through Americorps and Foundation Communities. She is President and Founder of University Community with Children, a support and advocacy group for students with children. As President of this organization, Tiffany has learned that no one person is better than another within a group, including the leader. She also has learned that delegating and allowing others to feel a part of the team allow for better collaboration, relationship building and growth. Sarah Elizabeth Riedel

Sarah has learned the best characteristic of a leader is time management. While maintaining a high grade point average, Sarah has managed her time well at UTA. She is President of Phi Alpha Delta, Pre-Law Honor Society, and a member of the Criminal Justice Student Organization, UTA Ambassadors and Maverick Maniacs. She is also a mentor for new students through UTA HOSTS! and has served as an orientation leader for the Office of Admissions. In addition to these accomplishments, Sarah is the recipient of several scholarships including the Freshman Achievement Scholarship and the Alpha Phi Omega Theta Tau Scholarship. Her role model is Dara Newton, Associate Director of Admissions. Dara continues to be very influential in Sarah’s success at UTA.

Jennifer Nicole Roetzel

Jennifer expects to graduate in May 2005 with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. She is a member and leader in several student organizations including the American Institute of Aeronautics, Alpha Sigma Kappa, Society of Women Engineers and UTA HOSTS!. In spring 2004, she won Most Philanthropic Sister from Alpha Sigma Kappa, a women’s technical studies sorority. While keeping up with her grades, Jennifer finds time to volunteer in several community activities including Hope Tutoring, Race for the Cure, the Girl Scouts and the Cow Town Brush Up. The most useful lesson Jennifer has learned through all of these experiences is time management. The person most influential in her career at UTA is Dr. Dale Anderson. He taught her you can do anything you set your mind to.

Anete Rozkalne

As a member of the UTA Tennis Team, Anete won the 2004 Southland Conference Women’s Tennis All-Conference Team Doubles. She is an outstanding student, earning a place on the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. In addition to being a student and an athlete, Anete finds the time to volunteer and participate in several community and student organizations. She has learned through her volunteer experiences that even though she is only able to dedicate small amounts of time to projects outside the classroom, it is her willingness and dedication that allow her to make an impact in the community. Dr. Malgosia Wilk-Blaszczak has been important in helping Anete succeed at UTA.

Cristina Elena Saldivar

As Chairman for the Nursing Graduating Class of 2004’s Pinning Ceremony, Cristina has learned firsthand the stress instructors go through when trying to keep a group focused on learning a new subject. She enjoys teaching other students as a Nursing Math Mentor and Pharmacology Mentor. In December 2004, Cristina graduated from UTA Magna Cum Laude. She was the winner of the UTA SON Junior Two Peer Award and UTA SON Pediatric Nursing Student Award. Particularly important to her success is Gina Thames, Pharmacology Instructor. Gina’s spirit is what motivated Cristina to succeed. She would like to thank the UTA SON Learning Resource Center staff, who assisted her with countless class projects.

Andrea Nicole Sample

As a Marketing major, Andrea has done an outstanding job of marketing herself at UTA. She is a member of several organizations and committees such as the Leadership Academy, EX.C.E.L., UTA HOSTS!, the University Parking and Appeals Committee, the Student Alumni Association, and the Mavs Meet Convocation Committee. She has also spent many hours volunteering in the Arlington community by helping children with homework through the Boys and Girls Club. Andrea is a member of several honor societies and the recipient of various scholarships including winning Omega Delta Phi’s Miss Silver Rose Scholarship. In spring 2004, she was a finalist for admission to the Goolsby Leadership Academy. Meghan Susan Schulte

Seeing people overcome enormous adversity allows Meghan to see her true potential. As a volunteer at Baylor Rehabilitation Center and a Tournament Coordinator for the Dallas Wheelchair Mavericks, Meghan observes people overcome obstacles and challenges. She has learned not to take for granted things such as walking and being able to feed yourself. She is a member of the UTA Dance Ensemble and former manager of the UTA Movin’ Mavs. Jim Hayes has been the most influential person in Meghan’s collegiate experience.

Melanie Renee Sears

Melanie has been very active with the Department of Campus Recreation during her time at UTA. She is a recent graduate from the College of Education and was listed on the Distinguished Honor Roll. As President of the Society of Women Engineers, Sunshine has learned to be well prepared for her classes so she can interact with her professors and classmates. Katherine is literally an Ambassador for UTA. Organizations she serves include Student Congress, the University Library Committee, the Honors College Council and the Maverick Maniacs. In addition, she is Founder and President of the Homeschool Graduates at UTA. Christine Corinne Simpson

Jasmine hopes one day to be recognized as a Distinguished Alumna. Certainly her service and commitment as a student deserve to be acknowledged. She is President of the Student Alumni Association and the Order of Omega and represents the College of Science as a Senator on Student Congress. She is very active in other campus and community organizations as well. She is the recipient of five scholarships and was a finalist for UTA’s Outstanding Student Leader Award in 2004. Being a member and leader, Jasmine is able to bring people together and is good at getting the most reserved individuals to come out of their shells. Sara’s travel to study abroad in St. Petersburg, Russia and serving as an intern at the US Embassy in Almaty, Kazakhstan have contributed significantly to her critical thinking skills while also improving her flexibility and opening her mind to diversity. She is a member of the UTA Russian Cultural Society, and Alpha Chi and Golden Key, scholastic honor societies. Shawn Michael Strange

Shawn’s ability to adapt to other cultures has helped him grow as a person. Learning that life should not be taken for granted has inspired him to do well in the classroom. Besides concentrating on his studies, Shawn is the Publications Director for the International Business Society, Vice President of Beta Gamma Sigma and also serves as a Student Congress Senator for the College of Business. Since 2001, he has made UTA’s Distinguished Honor Roll and is the winner of the Collegiate All-American Scholar Award. Faculty members that have played an important roll in Shawn’s career are Dr. Mark Petersen, Dr. Jane Himarios and Dr. Vicki Sapp.

Preethi Sundaradevan

Time management is the lesson Preethi has learned by juggling classes and extracurricular activities. Currently, she is the Treasurer of the Honors College Council and a member of Alpha Sigma Kappa and the Joint Council of Engineering Organizations. In 2003-2004, she was named to the Freshman Honors List, Distinguished Honor Roll and the National Dean’s List.

Georgette Allison Talley

Teaching a class as a Peer Leadership Trainer has given Georgette insight into the work instructors put into their classes to help students achieve success. She is dedicated to making a difference in the educational process of her students and gives them respect. Julie Marie Test

Julie is a student in the Architecture program at UTA. Her out-of-class experiences have given her the strength to take charge in the face of adversity. This lesson has also helped her in the classroom by giving her the courage to stand up to any challenge, giving her a closer connection between the classroom and the world. She is the recipient of the Mary I. Gourley Scholarship and a member of the Honor Roll. Architecture Advisor Cheryl Donaldson has been an important person to Julie.

Adenike O. Tokan-Lawal

Adenike has learned many lessons while being involved at UTA. She believes that in order to be a good leader, you must also be a good follower. Her diverse leadership experiences have taught her the importance of being a team player and she describes herself as an “aggressive academic challenger.” She is a member of six honor societies and has served as Secretary for Upsilon Pi Epsilon and Phi Beta Delta. Adenike is majoring in both Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. She is currently President of Eta Kappa Nu, Webmaster for the Society of Women Engineers and Academic Excellence Chair for the National Society of Black Engineers. Most of Adenike’s professors and faculty members have contributed to her academic and personal growth; however, Dr. Rebecca Dean, Dr. Rasool Kenarangui and Dr. Linda Barasch have been important influences in her life. These individuals have encouraged Adenike to “strive for excellence.”

Through his participation in many organizations, Roberto believes teamwork comes through effective communication. Jodi believes an important component of being a strong leader is time management. As a Mechanical Engineering major, Jodi is President of Alpha Sigma Kappa and a member of the Joint Council of Engineering Organizations and the Multicultural Greek Council. These experiences have given her the confidence to develop relationships with classmates which, in turn, as helped her discover the importance of networking. Kiet views the exchange of ideas and sharing of information with your peers as the backbone to his success. His involvement in campus organizations such as the Joint Admission Medical Program, Alpha Lambda Delta, First-Year Academic Honor Society, and the Student National Medical Association has inspired him to go the extra mile. He is also a member of the Honors College and winner of the College of Science Academic Excellence Award. Mr. Ed Morton has been vital to Kiet’s career in medicine by giving him advice and helping him join the Joint Admission Medical Program.

Swalpa Udit

Swalpa currently serves as President of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. As President, she has planned and coordinated several community outreach events such as a voter registration drive and a canned food drive. She is also developing a mentoring program designed to connect Honors College students and at-risk middle school children. These experiences have shown her that leadership begins with oneself. Swalpa thinks qualities such as dedication, perseverance and flexibility are essential to accomplishing even the most unapproachable goals. James hopes to attend law school after graduation. His participation in campus and community organizations has shown him the importance of time management. By prioritizing, he is good at balancing his school work and extracurricular activities. He was elected by his peers in the College of Liberal Arts to represent them in Student Congress. He is also an active member and officer for the Student Alumni Association, Phi Alpha Delta, Pre-Law Honor Society, and Alpha Tau Omega. Last spring, he was honored as the Outstanding Emerging Student Leader at UTA. He has received support and encouragement from many staff members at UTA.

Lydia Valenzuela

This past year, Lydia was elected President of Sigma Lambda Gamma. She has learned through her involvement in extracurricular activities that sometimes things do not go according to plan and quick decision making skills are essential for a leader. Due to her scholastic achievement, she has been invited to join Kappa Delta Pi, International Education Honor Society. Important to her achievements at UTA are Zurich Barry and Ray Casas. Mrs. Barry has been helpful to Lydia by giving her advice on her career and education. Ray Casas awarded her a scholarship in fall 2002 and has since been a mentor and friend.

Troung D. Vo

Troung will graduate in May with a degree in Biology. He is the President of Golden Key, scholastic honor society, Founder and President of the Pre-Dental Student Association and a Senator for the College of Science. Since January 2003, he has volunteered at the Mission Arlington Dental Clinic. His leadership experiences have given him the chance to become a stronger person and a more committed student. Dr. Joan Reinhardt has aided Troung in his success by helping him sharpen his leadership skills and giving him advice on his personal, academic and career decisions.

Lisette Zakiath Zounon

Lisette is the recipient of the Torchbearer for the National Society of Black Engineers. She also won the Outstanding Student Leadership Scholarship, Outstanding Transfer Scholarship and the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship. She has been a member and officer for several campus organizations such as the National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Women Engineers and the Joint Council of Engineering Organizations. Her involvement in these organizations has given her a better understanding of people with different backgrounds and cultures. She is more comfortable asking questions in the classroom and meeting new people because of her experiences.
