A Dallas Morning News article about area graduation events mentioned that actor James Franco will speak Friday at Graduation Celebration, a community festival that kicks off graduation weekend at The University of Texas at Arlington. The festival, which includes speakers, music and food, is free and open to the public.

4/30/12 - WFAA/ABC 8
UT Arlington volunteers along with the City of Arlington planted 100 new trees to round the pond outside Rangers Ballpark, WFAA/ABC 8 reported, in an Arbor Day story about the ongoing problem of dead trees in Texas.

RVSP's programmatic efforts for The Red Flag Campaign were highlighted in an article by The Shorthorn, which was featured on the national Red Flag Campaign Facebook page.

It wasn’t a bird or a plane flying through the halls of Methodist Children’s Hospital Thursday afternoon, KSAT.com (San Antonio) reported. Superman, Batman, and their superhero friends stopped by to a pay a visit to the patients there. In reality, the visitors are from the Beta Theta Pi fraternity (members of The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life) at UT Arlington, and this is part of their Heroes For Hope Spring Break tour. The group spends their vacation, in costume, going to hospitals throughout Texas and Louisiana.

UT Arlington’s Multicultural Affairs and African-American Alumni Association celebrated Black History Month with a performance Tuesday night by the acclaimed Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Examiner.com reported.

2/9/12 - KDFW/Fox/4
KDFW/Fox 4 broadcast a video of UT Arlington students participating in the Maverick Homecoming 2012 ‘Paint Your Ride with Maverick Pride’ event. The report noted the homecoming parade, men’s basketball game, and other homecoming activities scheduled for this weekend.

2/8/12 - KTVT/CBS/11
WFAA/Channel 8 reported on efforts by UT Arlington to curb what appears to be a rising trend in college cheating nationwide. The University is hiring an assistant director for academic integrity and intends to ask students to sign new honor codes. “It reminds them to be a student of character and I think that translates into positive ways in our community,” said Frank Lamas, vice president of student affairs.

KTVT CBS 11 broadcast its weather report from outside the College Park Center, taking advantage of mild February temperatures. On hand were the cheer squad, spirit squad, dancers, Maverick Wranglers and Blaze, the UT Arlington Mavericks mascot. All had been practicing since 7 a.m. Wednesday for last evening's activities.

1/26/12 - Fort Worth Star Telegram
University leaders including Dr. Frank Lamas, Vice President for Student Affairs say UT Arlington is shedding its commuter school reputation and becoming a destination college. Academic programs, enrollment growth and amenities -- like the $78 million College Park Center, which will open on 2/1/12 -- are all part of the recruiting package, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. The Star-Telegram package also featured a video and a photo gallery (featuring the Maverick Wranglers, UT Arlington's newest student spirit section) of the College Park Center.

The Arlington Winter Run, now the Don Zetnick Winter Run, will celebrate its 34th year Dec. 3 beginning at the Maverick Activities Center at UT Arlington, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Three races offer something for all ages with a 1K Penguin Waddle for kids under 11, a two-mile walk/run certified by USA Track & Field, and a 10K. The course route meanders through beautiful wooded neighborhoods surrounding the campus.

The expansion of Native American Heritage Month was highlighted in the Fort Worth Star Telegram. The program is overseen by the NASA (Native American Student Association), the Honors College, Department of Linguistics, the Office of Multicultural Affairs and The Division of Student Affairs.

The Fall Diversity Lecture Series: From the Streets of Havana to the Halls of Capitol Hill featuring keynote Mauricio Claver Carone was highlighted The Dallas Morning News Education Notes.

10/17/11 - KXTA/Channel 21/CBS
UT Arlington students wrote words of encouragement to domestic violence victims, KTXA/Channel 21 reported. The students wrote in chalk on campus sidewalks outside the library for the Chalk it Up event as part of other activities during October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness month. The Chalk it Up event was sponsored by the RVSP program (Relationship, Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention) and the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

The Bed Races were featured in a clip in the KXAS/NBC5 news. The Bed Races are overseen by EXCEL Campus Activities and the Department of Campus Recreation.

9/27/11 - The Dallas Gospel Connection
The Movin' Mavs were featured in a profiling article in the Sports Zone section of the Dallas Gospel Connection.

9/19/11 - KXAS/NBC5
Two former UT Arlington and NFL players spoke with students on Monday night (9/19) about the problem of hazing on college campuses, KXAS/NBC5 reported. The speech was part of a series of events planned at the University as part of National Hazing Prevention Week. Hazing Prevention Week was planned and coordinated by two Divisional offices, the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life and the Office of Community Standards.

The New Maverick Orientation program and Associate Director, Brian Joyce were featured in a Fort Worth Star Telegram article on orientation leaders and programs aimed at helping students on a number of fronts, including financial aid, tutoring and counseling and programs aimed at helping students on a number of fronts, including financial aid, tutoring and counseling.

Arlington Texas.gov recently posted a listing on the EXCEL Summer Movie Series, which is running for its 32nd year this season. The group is showing all pre-home release titles this summer with the exception of two classics, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Goonies. All screenings are open to all UT Arlington students, faculty, staff and community members.

Carter Bedford, UT Arlington director of student governance and organizations, was recently elected as a board member of the Arlington Life Shelter, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

USA Today, The Boston Herald.com, Austin American-Statesman, El Paso Times, Sports Technology & Communications and several other media outlets carried an Associated Press report about UT Arlington Movin’ Mavs Coach Doug Garner. The report said the coach who has helped the University of Texas at Arlington become a power in wheelchair basketball has helped the Army beat the Marines in a Warrior Games rematch. The Army chose Garner to lead its wheelchair squad on the recommendation of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

For the Army, winning the gold medal in wheelchair basketball Saturday night at the Warrior Games fulfilled a yearlong objective, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Since finishing second to the Marines in last year’s inaugural games, the Army had set its sights on assembling a talented team and getting it trained for this year. On the recommendation of the U.S. Olympic Committee, the Army picked University of Texas at Arlington Movin’ Mavs coach Doug Garner to lead its squad. In the near future, Time Warner Cable plans a 30-minute special about the Movin’ Mavs/Army partnership, Garner said.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Work Faces column reported that Frank Lamas, The University of Texas at Arlington’s vice president for student affairs, has been elected to the board of NASPA — Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

Close to 50 UT Arlington students, faculty and staff appeared on the WFAA News 8 Daybreak morning show to promote the 2011 Big Event, which is the University’s largest day of community service. The event itself, which took place on Saturday, April 16th, 2011 registered 901 student, staff, faculty and community volunteers and successfully completed 3,604 hours of community service during the one-day event.

March 2011 – Columbia Scholastic Press Association, cspa.columbia.edu
The recently re-vamped Shorthorn website, www.theshorthorn.com, was selected as a finalist for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Crown award in March 2011. This is one of the highest awards in college media. The website received a Silver Crown award on March 13th and was named one of the seven best college websites in the country.

December 2011 – NASPA (National Association of Student Personnel Administrators), naspa.org
A program of the department of Multicultural Affairs, Diversity Week: It’s a Maverick World was selected as the silver medal honoree in the International, Multicultural, Cultural, LGBTQ, Spirituality, Disability, and Related category at the NASPA (National Association of Student Personnel Administrators) awards in December 2010.

The Movin’ Mavs Adapted Sports and Recreation program was selected as a silver medal honoree in the Athletics, Recreation, Physical Fitness, Non-Varsity Sports and related category at the NASPA (National Association of Student Personnel Administrators) awards in December 2010.

October 2010 – College Media Advisers, collegemedia.org
Adam Drew, Production Manager for Student Publications received a College Media Advisers Board of Directors Citation in October 2010 for his work on CMR Review, the organization’s magazine, and his technical contributions to college media advisers nationwide. The board’s Citation honoring Adam was announced at the annual National College Media Convention in Louisville. College Media Advisers is the nation’s largest professional organization for people who work with college media.

July 2010 – NBC 5, KXAS
New Maverick Orientation staff and leaders were featured in an NBC 5 spotlight video in July ’10 on the thousands of veterans leaving the military for college with the help of the post 9/11 GI bill. New Maverick Orientation created the Veterans Orientation at UT Arlington in partnership with Veterans Affairs and the President’s Veterans Committee.

Fall 2009 – Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education, cas.edu
The Division of Student Affairs received the Ted K. Miller Achievement of Excellence Award from the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education for conducting outstanding work assessing student learning and development in Fall 2009.

The Maverick Activities Center won the 2008 Athletic Business Facilities of Merit Award.
