LGBTQA/Gender Task Force Summary Report, Spring 2012

The University of Texas at Arlington takes pride in the rich heritage of cultures present in our campus community. The Division of Student Affairs is committed to supporting our diverse student body by promoting education, respect, and civility through our inclusive and accessible programming and services for all students. In response to student feedback, Dr. Frank Lamas, Vice President of Student Affairs, convened a task force in spring 2012. This task force would explore and identify avenues to strengthen university resources that address the needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and ally campus community. As part of their charge, the task force would also consider the role of gender and equity in addressing these needs.

The convening of the task force could not have been timelier as The University of Texas at Arlington hosted the White House LGBT Conference on Safe Schools and Communities, an event that featured remarks from Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. and Valerie B. Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Obama. At the event held in March 2012, University President Dr. James Spaniolo stated, “We must do the right thing to ensure a safe learning environment for all students. The keys to solving problems are knowledge and communication.”

In Fall 2011, Dr. Lamas presented on the Division of Student Affairs and our efforts towards student retention, student success, quality of campus experience, tier one aspirations, student services and programs, student learning and academic and university partnerships.

Student Technology Report to the President, Spring, 2010

In Spring 2010, Dr. Lamas and a committee of UT Arlington staff members and students were charged by President Spaniolo to assess the current locations and configurations of computer labs on campus. They were given the task of developing recommendations for what the University can do in the next several years to bring the labs into the 21st century in terms of hardware, software, and printers that are optimal for student use. The committee was charged with considering computing space on campus for students, developing a financially sound and strategic model for deployment of computers outside the classrooms and also to include observations and recommendations for the short-term.

Committee on Diversity and International Understanding, Summer 2007

In Fall 2006, upon the removal of the flags that were formerly displayed in the atrium of Nedderman Hall, President James D. Spaniolo appointed the Committee on Diversity and International Understanding. After holding forums for discussion, online group discussions, and analyzing the feedback that was collected, the committee has compiled its findings which have been submitted to President Spaniolo.
