How does the mentor/mentee relationship work?
UTA-HOSTS! mentors provide new students with information about campus and community resources, activities, organizations, important dates, and deadlines. Peer mentors help new students learn how to succeed in their college careers while providing support and encouragement. Mentors are not expected to be counselors or tutors. Primary responsibility for contact lies with the mentee.
How are the mentors and mentees paired together?
The primary criterion for matching mentors and mentees is academic major; if an identical major is not available, then the mentor and mentee will be matched by college or school. UTA-HOSTS! encourages a diverse and multicultural university community and therefore does not match by ethnicity, age, or gender unless specifically requested. Once matched, participants are notified either by mail or e-mail.
How much contact are we required to have?
The program has a minimum commitment of approxiamately 4 times per month, however, some contace once per week is recommended. Contact can be by telephone, e-mail, or in person. Matched participants may adjust this to fit each other's needs.
Who manages the program?
The UTA-HOSTS! Advisor, Molly Alfers, and the Student Coordinator, Josh Sawyer.
