Debbie King is the Vice President of Actuarial at The Republic Group. She is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. She has been the Chief Actuary for The Republic Group since 1998. Previously, she was Director of Personal Lines Pricing for Farmers Insurance Company. She graduated from University of Southern California in Los Angeles majoring in Math.

Sandra Wang is an Actuarial Analyst at The Republic Group. She has been part of the Personal Lines Pricing actuarial team since 2008. She graduated from SUNY Albany in a degree in actuarial science. She has completed 4 actuarial exams and 2 online modules towards ACAS.

The Republic Group is a property and casualty business located in Dallas.


Jean-Marc Fix, FSA, MAAA

Jean-Marc Fix is Vice President of Research and Development at Optimum Re. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He graduated from Whittier College in California with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and minors in Chemistry and Computer Science.

Over his 25 years career, he has worked for four companies in three states. He’s worked on many aspects of life insurance product design as well as reinsurance. He is now working in a less traditional role but still focused on mortality. He is also active in a number of volunteer opportunities at the Society of Actuaries, most notably as a committee member on the “Living to 100” symposiums.

He is still close friends with the first actuary he ever met, the person who interviewed him for his first internship.


Shelly Lewis, FSA, MAAA, FCA

Shelly is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a Bachelor's in Actuarial Science and Mathematics. During college, she completed an internship within the property and casualty arena.

Shelly has 10+ years of actuarial experience; 3 years in retirement consulting, 1 year in valuation of life reinsurance, 4 years in valuation and pricing of individual health products, and 2+ years in large group health analysis and consulting.

Shelly obtained her ASA in 2006 and FSA in early 2010.

Sally Smith, Ph.D., MAA, FSA
Monday October 17, 2011 at Noon in Pickard Hall Room 308

Sally Smith is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. She has worked for Citi Assurance Services, a division of Citigroup, for the past eight years. She works in the areas of valuation and financial reporting and currently serves as the Appointed Actuary for the two life insurance companies that are part of CAS.

Sally earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2001. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Dallas.

Sally and her husband David live in Arlington and have three children.


Michael H Crawford, FSA
October 28, 2011 at 1PM in Pickard Hall Room 308

Michael Crawford is an FSA employed at Life of the Southwest in Addison. He has a BS in Mathematics from Baylor and a MS in Applied Mathematics from Texas A&M.

He has worked as an actuary at five different life insurance companies since starting in the insurance industry in 1991.

He job duties currently involve valuation and financial modeling. He will give a half hour talk on life insurance modeling issues and then will answer questions about getting started in an actuarial career.


Aimee Strickland, FSA, EA, MAA

Aimee Strickland is a Senior Manager at Ernst & Young in Dallas. She is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries, Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and Enrolled Actuary.

Ernst & Young is one of the Big Four accounting firms. Ernst & Young has headquarters in London. It has over 150,000 employees worldwide including over 150 actuaries in the US.
