Window into Imagination is (going to be) an augmented reality system that, more than likely, will utilize the hardware of the Android and/or iPhone. Imagine Second Life, but in Real Life. You can create and interact with various virtual items that have been scattered around the real world. There are countless possible uses for such a system, ranging from virtual art, to unique worlds/experiences, to something as mundane as a sticky note system, and well beyond. Games and experiences that have never been seen or thought of before can be created easily using a Window.

Features to be eventually implemented:

  • Completely geo-positional/accelerometer based. No image recognition (complicated, takes up lots of extra resources, and can be faulty).
  • Items are stored on a set of central servers. There will eventually be too many objects to keep on each phone + constantly updating with new facts as folks mess around with items.
  • Eventually add in a 'walls' system. Users add in the locations of walls/large bulky objects that would block line of sight in real life, and they'll block line of sight for virtual objects as well. Use the average location of walls as GPS wavers in location somewhat.
  • Everything is user created. We can't go everywhere in the world adding new things. Plus, the more minds involved, the more creative things can be.
  • -Add in a public Kill/Praise vote function as well. If someone adds something inappropriate, it needs to go.

Currently, there is work on a game that would utilize several of the basic features/concepts behind the Window, but without being quite as complicated. If it works, then it would be just another couple of (large) steps to the finished Window. Information about Marker Hunts (the game) can be found here.
