The Nu Iota
Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. began in 1992. A steady force
of eight women, known as the "Excellent Eight", came together
to create an organizational body that would honestly serve the needs of
the community.
Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service
are the principles that bond Sigma women. Promoting unity is the common
purpose of our sisterhood that is a lifetime commitment to the acquisition
of knowledge and community service for the betterment of society. Our
charter members believed that promoting higher education for women ensures
the stability of the future. These women decided to bond together to bring
a chapter of this illustrious sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho, to The University
of Texas at Arlington on March 21, 1993. These women are Michelle Swancy,
Sandra Birdwell, Cassandra Rice, Tangela Carter, Laketia Williams Blair,
Kamisha Hendrix, Tina Johnson, and Rhonda Hayes.
Continuing in the legacy of the charter
members of Nu Iota, we uphold the light of Sigma Gamma Rho through working
for the betterment of our sorority, our campus, and community as a whole.
We strive for high scholastic achievement and believe in hard work and dedication.
We keep the Sigma Light shining at UTA by participating in local community
service pursuits such as the March of Dimes,
Race for the Cure, Adopt-an-Angel, Canned Food
Drives, Adopt-a-Family, and Breast Cancer Awareness.
