SHPE is the Source for Quality Hispanic Engineers and Technical Talend.
The Society of Hispanic
Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los
Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers
employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was
to form a national organization of professional
engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic
community.
The concept of Networking was
the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly
established two student chapters to begin the network
that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach
countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys
a strong but independent network of professional and
student chapters throughout the nation.
SHPE UTA was founded in 1990 by a
group of students who had the vision to see the need of
influential and motivational Hispanic engineering
students within the College of Engineering at the
University of Texas at Arlington. Since its inception,
SHPE UTA has made great strides in establishing
professional and motivational activities in which its
members could participate. In 1998, SHPE UTA hosted its
first regional conference, the Professional and Student
Advisory Conference (PSAC). Membership within SHPE UTA
exceeded 50 members. This was the peak of the chapter’s
development. In 1999, the members of the student chapter
at U.T. Arlington graduated. With their graduation came
the end of a prosperous era for SHPE UTA. The next two
years were filled with little activity within the
student chapter.
During the Fall Semester of
2000, a group of proactive members saw the potential in
this great organization. They began to motivate and
promote the advancement of Hispanics in engineering on
campus and within the community. Ever since it’s rebirth
in 2000, SHPE UTA has been on a bumpy ride. Its
membership has grown and dropped year after year. Never
the less, its membership is always growing. Today SHPE
UTA stands 45 members strong. Last year brought many new
and motivated members, some of which have taken the
steps in becoming its leadership for this year.
