UT Arlington Student Publications provides experience and training that complements students’ coursework in journalism and other fields, prepares students for careers in journalism and related professions and provides students with leadership opportunities. Through work on The Shorthorn, UTA’s award-winning student newspaper (and one of UTA’s oldest traditions); The Shorthorn Online, and other projects, students gain experience in writing, editing, photography, design, advertising, graphics and illustration, website development, accounting and media management.
This experience gives more than 100 students a year a chance to provide important news and information resources for the UTA community, develop skills, enhance their college experience, build resumes and explore career options — in paid, on-campus jobs. All students on the staffs of UTA’s student publications work in paid positions.
In addition to student media, the department publishes a special publication for new students each summer; coordinates PowerBuy, an advertising consortium for student newspapers at colleges and universities throughout the Metroplex, and other projects.
