The Shorthorn:

The Shorthorn, UTA’s award-winning student newspaper,
is the main source of news and information about UTA for
students, faculty and staff. Its mission (informally adopted
by editors in 1997):
•
provide news and information for the UTA community;
• provide a forum
of opinion for the UTA community, and
• provide training
for students interested in careers in journalism, advertising
and related professions. |

Student staff:

The Shorthorn staff members come from all majors and levels
of experience; limited training is provided by Shorthorn
editors and advisers. The Shorthorn’s editor in chief
is selected by the UTA Student Publications Advisory Committee.
The editor in turn selects other Shorthorn editors and staff
members and has full authority over Shorthorn content.

The Shorthorn employs approximately 70 students each semester,
providing paid on-campus employment that complements coursework
and provides practical training for students planning careers
in journalism and other professions. At last count, approximately
600 people who called The Shorthorn their first daily newspaper
home were working in professional media positions nationwide.
History:

Published
continuously since 1919, The Shorthorn is one of the oldest
institutions at the university. It got its start when three
students wanted a student publication and got its name in
a campus referendum, in which The Shorthorn was selected
over such alternatives as Thistle and Grub Worm.
The Shorthorn has gained a reputation for journalistic quality
regionally and nationally. Work published in The Shorthorn
won more than 100 awards for its student staff during the
2005-06 publishing year. It is a charter member of the College
Media Hall of Fame.
The online edition - www.theshorthorn.com - was added in 1997.
