Work For Us

Why You should work for us

Help pay for your college while you prepare for your future. Working in Student Publications allows students to earn valuable experience that complements coursework and prepares them for careers in journalism and many other areas, to become involved in a respected campus activity ... and to earn a paycheck. We employ about 100 students each semester. Most are on the staff of The Shorthorn. Currently enrolled UTA students who meet UTA employment guidelines are eligible to apply for these positions; all positions are paid.

How to Apply

The Shorthorn staff members are hired one semester at a time. As each semester’s staff is being hired, applications are accepted for all positions. After that time, as staff turnover occurs during a semester, applications are accepted for open positions. Position openings are advertised in The Shorthorn’s print and online editions and listed in the Student Publications office. Staff members must be enrolled in classes at UTA when they are on staff. You can apply online, or in person in the Student Publications Office, University Center lower level. Positions that pay an hourly rate also require an application through the UTA Handshake system.

The Process

The UTA Student Publications Committee selects The Shorthorn editor in chief. Other staff members are selected through an application/interview process. Prior experience on The Shorthorn staff is required for editor and other student manager positions. Qualifications, pay rates and work schedules vary position-to-position. The Shorthorn and Student Publications staff members come from all majors and levels of experience; training is provided by The Shorthorn editors and professional staff advisers.
