About Us

The McNair Scholars Program strives to provide opportunities to disadvantaged undergraduates that will assist them to overcome the obstacles often associated with low socio-economic and/or minority status and, via graduate study, to reach their full academic and professional potential.

Background

The McNair Scholars Program at UT Arlington was funded by the U.S. Department of Education in 1990. It is one of approximately 170 McNair programs at public and private colleges and universities throughout the United States.

The program works with a minimum of 34 Scholars each academic year. It recruits new participants from all majors (in which one might earn a Ph.D.) each fall for spring admission. The program particularly encourages science, technology, engineering and mathematics majors to apply. McNair Scholars remain active members of the program until they graduate with a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree.

Some McNair Scholars remain on campus for their graduate studies, while others attend graduate programs at institutions throughout the nation. Many Scholars receive substantial funding packages either from their graduate programs or from outside granting agencies.


Eligibility

The McNair Scholars Program is a federally-funded TRIO program. Participants must be:

  • U. S. Citizens or Permenent Residents;
  • first-time UT Arlington sophomores, juniors, or seniors (not graduating prior to the fall after completing the summer internship)*;
  • First-generation** AND low-income OR ethnically underrepresented in graduate education***;
  • maintaining a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA;
  • committed to the McNair Scholars Program until graduation; and
  • determined to pursue a PhD as well as a career as a researcher and university professor.

*Students who have graduated with a four-year degree are not eligible.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I am not sure I qualify, what should I do?

  • Contact a MSP staff member in 101 College Hall or via email at mcnair@uta.edu.

If I qualify, am I automatically a McNair Scholar after applying?

  • No, Scholars are selected on a competitive basis because there are more applicants than spots available. Semi-finalists are interviewed by McNair staff, and applications are then reviewed by a selection committee comprised of UTA professors from various departments on campus.

Does the program accept applicants from all majors?

  • Yes, the MSP accepts applicants in all majors in which one can earn the PhD. 

I want to be a doctor?  Can I still be a McNair Scholar?

  • No, the program is funded only to work with students who want to earn a PhD. Students planning to earn professional doctorates do not qualify.

When does the program recruit new participants?

  • The MSP recruits only once per year in the fall semester.  The application period begins October 1 and continues through early November.  Applications are online, and tax forms are turned in to the McNair office.
Are only undererpresented minority students eligible for this program?
  • No, at least two-thirds of McNair Scholars must be from first-generation AND low-income backgrounds.  The program may accept up to one-third of our 32 participants each year who are not first-gen/low income, but they must be from ethnicities underrerpesented in graduate education (African-American, Hispanic, Native American and Alaskan, Hawaiian, Pacific Islander).

When will students learn of their application status?

  • By late December of each year, all viable applicants will be notified as to their semi-finalist status.  Semi-finalists will be expected to schedule an interview with program staff for mid-January.

When is the final admissions decision made?

  • Program staff and the McNair Faculty Selection Committee (whose members also review semi-finalist applications during the holiday break) meet by the second week of spring semester to share their assessments.  The McNair director makes the final decision by late January.  Successful candidates enter the program in February and remain active McNair Scholars until graduation.

Benefits

McNair Scholars benefits from a considerable array of services ranging from free UTA transcripts for program-related use to a summer research internship with $3,000 stipend. Such benefits allow participants multiple opportunities to develop their academic and professional potential and to realize their dream of attaining a Ph.D. and entering academia. Scholars enjoy the following:

  • Participation in the McNair Summer Research Internship (under the supervision of a faculty mentor) during the summer prior to graduation
  • Establishing a relationship with a faculty research mentor in the Scholar's intended area of study
  • Three credit hours of independent study related to summer research
  • Improved research, writing and presentation skills
  • Publication of research abstract in the UTA McNair Scholars Research Journal
  • Possible publication of research paper in a professional journal
  • Conference attendance in and outside of Texas (often including graduate school fairs)

  • Scholar's name and intended area of graduate study sent to programs throughout the United States (who then send student relevant information/application materials)

Our Mission:
