Our Services

SSS staff members assist students with selecting courses, setting academic goals, developing strategies for academic achievement, and preparing for meetings with their major academic advisors. Students work directly with our staff to explore current academic needs and the resources available to develop an individualized system of support. Coaching and advising are offered for personal, financial, and career matters.

Coaching & Guidance

Each participant works with a Student Development Specialist (SDS) to explore their current academic needs and the resources available to develop a plan of action. The SDS are knowledgeable of UT Arlington's requirements and expectations and help participants find solutions to problems they may encounter.

The focus on individualized coaching and support addresses each participant’s need for improvement and development in the following areas: academics, financial literacy, and personal & social matters.

ACADEMIC AND LIFE SKILLS LEARNING FORUMS

Our forums educate and assist participants in developing the necessary skills to graduate and achieve their goals. SSS conducts forum workshops in a number of areas related to academic success. Past topics have included academic and personal development, time management and test-taking skills.

FINANCIAL EDUCATION AND PROGRAMMING

SSS offers information about federal student aid, assistance in applying for financial aid, and activities designed to inform participants about financial and economic literacy.

  • Information in applying for financial aid (grants, scholarships, loans, etc.)
  • Assistance in applying for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Education/counseling to improve financial and economic literacy

PEER-ASSISTED STUDY SESSIONS AND TUTORING

Tutoring is an active-learning process, requiring the student and tutor to achieve an understanding of course material through one-on-one and small group interaction. SSS tutors are trained extensively and are upper-division students who have been recommended by UT Arlington professors in their tutorial field. Program participants also have access to private study rooms in the SSS suite.
