Supplemental Instruction Leaders

If you are interested in becoming an SI Leader, please take the time to read through all the qualifications and responsibilities.  Application procedures can be found at the bottom of this page.


  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale) is required.
  • A grade of B or higher in the selected course
  • Preference will be given to students who:
    • have prior enrollment with the professor who is teaching the selected course
    • have completed the course at UTA
    • have received UTA transfer credit for the course from an accredited institution
  • Content competency (to be determined by the selected course professor)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (to be determined by the SI supervisor) are required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Attend initial SI Leader Training and ongoing trainings throughout the term
  • Attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, do homework and read all assigned materials including texts and supplemental readings.
  • Conduct at least three hours of study sessions per week through the term using strategies learned through the SI leader training workshop.
  • Regularly meet with the SI supervisor and professor.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Provide extra SI sessions and/or marathon sessions as necessary.
  • Develop and provide handouts for use during each SI session.
  • Provide developed handouts to professor regularly.
  • Meet with other campus SI leaders and supervisory staff at scheduled meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Coordinator. This will include at least one attendance at another SI Leaders session during the semester.

Maintenance Responsibilities

  • Complete necessary personnel paperwork.
  • Attend SI leader training workshop prior to the beginning of each semester.
  • Make periodic announcements about the availability of the SI sessions to the students.
  • Ensure that initial SI survey and End-of-Curse surveys are distributed and assist with data analysis.
  • Collect attendance data for every SI session, include student names, course title, date and time of session.
  • Assist SI supervisor in the preparation of end-of-term reports and other reports as requested.
  • Maintain a professional attitude about matters such as class standards, grades, and student complaints.
  • Model appropriate professional attitude and behaviors to staff, students and others.
  • Provide your SI supervisor with an up-to-date schedule of your SI sessions.
  • Notify your SI supervisor in advance if you cannot conduct a SI session as scheduled.
  • Maintain regular working hours.
