Freshman Interest Groups (FIGS)
WHAT ARE FIGS?
A Maverick Scholars Freshman Interest Group (FIG) is an exciting way for first-year students to merge their academic priorities with their personal and social goals. You join a FIG based on your major, and will get matched with students in the same field. You will take your first year seminar course with these students, and it will be taught by a successful UTA student, also known as a Peer Academic Leader (preferably in the same field as the students). You will also be placed into a few other classes with the FIG students. This allows you to have a built in study group of people in your major from your first day here at UTA!
In order to ensure there is a group for everyone, we offer two options: Classic and Residential. To learn more about FIG options, please review this document.
Residential FIGs
If you are interested in a residential FIG, specify this option on your housing application. You do not need to fill out an additional FIG application here once you have selected this option.
WHY JOIN A FIG?
- The first freshman orientation of each summer is reserved for FIG students
- Reserved seats in important core classes
- Opportunity to join a Residential group, and live in one of our Residence Halls with your FIG
- First year seminar class focused specifically on being successful in your major
- Valuable personal experiences from the Peer Academic Leader
- Historically FIG students have been more successful in their other courses

How do I apply?
Joining a FIG couldn't be easier. Simply follow these steps but remember that space is limited, so apply early to ensure that you get into the group you want. Click here if you're having trouble determining which FIG is right for you.
