Computer Skills Placement (CSP)

Beginning with the fall 1999 semester, UTA undergraduate students must satisfy a computer proficiency requirement in one of two ways:

  • Completion of a course designated by the department of their major as satisfactory OR
  • Successful completion of the Computer Skills Placement test with a score of 64.

The 70-question Computer Skills Placement test contains 10 multiple-choice questions and performance-based items from each of the following skills area:

  • Basic Concepts of Information Technology
  • Using the Computer and Managing Files
  • Word Processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Databases
  • Presentation
  • Information and Communication

A passing score of 64 is required to fulfill the graduation requirement. No course credit will be awarded. There is a 30-day waiting period to re-test. The test is only available to UTA students.

Test Preparation

You may search for a Microsoft tutorial on the Internet. You will need to know MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access (MS Office 2007/Vista) Beginning June 1, 2014 the exam will cover MS Office 2010 and Windows 7). You will also need to be familiar with computer basics and the Internet.

CSP Registration

Register at You must have your 10-digit UTA ID number to register.


$30 This exam may be rescheduled at no charge if you modify your test date online at least 24 hours in advance. If you cancel or do not show up on the day of the test, you will lose your $30 test fee.


You may re-test after a 30-day waiting period. You may only attempt this test three times. If you do not pass on the third try, you must take the computer course designated by your major.

Score Reports

Once you have successfully completed the test, you will receive your score and your student record will be modified to indicate that you have satisfied the computer proficiency requirement. If you have failed the test, you may take it again after 30 days or take the designated course.
