The Center for Economic Development Research and Service was established with support from the Economic Development Administration, US Department of Commerce, at The University of Texas at Arlington, in 1994. it is located in the School of Urban and Public Affairs and complements the work of the school and its Institute of Urban Studies.

The Institute was created in 1967 by a special act of the Texas Legislature and charged with a 3-fold mission of research service and education in urban areas. In fulfilling its research mandate, the Institute strives to identify, describe and develop alternatives to pressing public policy problems facing urban Texas and to disseminate this information to decision makers throughout the State. Publications of the Institute and more recently the Center for Economic Development Research and Service are found in many libraries and economic development offices in Texas. These publications frequently are used as texts at universities and training conferences.
