Ph.D Urban Planning and Public Policy (UPPP)

At the beginning of each semester, students must confer with their
graduate advisor, either by phone, email, or appointment, to obtain approval of their program of work.

Exams
Students begin the program in a fall semester and sit for the Diagnostic Examination during the immediate subsequent spring semester.

Students sit for the written Research Proficiency Examination near the end of thesecond spring semester.

Students sit for a written comprehensive exam in each of Urban Policy and Urban Planning after completing the
relevant coursework.

Students may take both written comprehensive exams in the same semester. If only one exam is taken and it is passed, then the student must take the second written comprehensive exam the following semester.

Students must be enrolled for at least three hours to take their comprehensive exams. It is highly recommended that students enroll in URPA 6305, Seminar in Urban Policy Processes (offered Fall semester only), and CIRP 6305, Seminar in Urban Planning Processes (offered Spring semester only), during the semester
they take their Policy and Planning comprehensive exam respectively. Upon successful completion of the written
comprehensive exams, students sit for their oral comprehensive exam.

Upon successful completion of the oral comprehensive exam, students advance to doctoral candidacy and begin work on the dissertation. The following schedule is a general calendar a student could expect to follow over four academic years.

Students who are in the first year of the program are encouraged to enroll in “foundation” coursework:
URPA 5304, URPA 5305, and/or URPA 5306 (choose two of the three) are required foundation courses in Public Policy.
CIRP 5303 and CIRP 5310 are required foundation courses in Urban Planning. URPA 6301 is the required foundation course in Research and Analysis.
