The University of Texas at Arlington Alumni Association established the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1965. The purpose of the annual Distinguished Alumni Awards is to recognize outstanding alumni for their individual achievements, contributions to their industries or professions, service to their community and demonstrated loyalty to The University of Texas at Arlington. Several School of Urban and Public Affairs alumni have been honored with the award.
The Honorable Lon Burnam
2011 Honoree
Lon Burnam exemplifies the good public servant. A community activist while earning his master’s degree in city and regional planning, he has worked and volunteered with nonprofit organizations on utility regulations, insurance reform, and historic preservation. Since 1996 he has served as state representative for District 90. His legislative work often focuses on environmental, educational, and social justice issues. Since taking office, he has ensured that 27 interns from the School of Social Work saw real problems faced by real people and learned to maneuver state agencies to resolve them. He worked with the Center for Mexican American Studies on issues protecting community interests. The director of the Dallas Peace Center for 10 years, Burnam is now a nonprofit consultant to civil rights and religious pluralism organizations. Last year the Peace Center created the Lon Burnam Environmental Justice Fund.
