This is the basic procedure in calculating a Grade Point Average (GPA):
GPA = Total Grade Point Earned ÷ Total Hours Attempted
| Grade | Description | Grade Points Per Semester Hour |
|---|---|---|
| A | Excellent | 4 |
| B | Good | 3 |
| C | Fair | 2 |
| D | Passing, Below Average | 1 |
| F | Failure | 0 |
| X | Incomplete | 0 |
| W | Withdrawn | 0 |
| P | Pass | 0 |
| Z | No Credit | 0 |
For example: Sam Maverick takes two classes and earns an A in ENGL 1301 and a D in BIOL 1441, what is his GPA?
ENGL 1301 4 grade points X 3 credit hours = 12 points earned
BIOL 1441 1 grade point X 4 credit hours = 4 points earned
Total 7 credit hours 16 points earned
16 total grade points ÷ 7 credit hours = 2.28 GPA
Students can calculate their semester GPA by simply looking at the course taken in a given semester or calculate their cumulative GPA by looking at all of the courses taken at UTA.
