(Spoken English Assessment)

The Spoken English Assessment may be taken at UT Arlington in cases in which the student has come to UT Arlington without having taken the TSE-A or having a passing score on the TOEFL iBT speaking componenet and subsequently wishes to be considered for a graduate teaching assistantship.

The Graduate School requires students who do not pass TSE-A, Spoken English Assessment, or ELI interview to sign up for Developmental English OR may have one retake of the Spoken English Assessment. For more information, see the English Language Institute in Room 402 Hammond Hall (817/272-2730).

SEA Practice Test

There is a cassette tape with a practice test that you may use to prepare for the SEA. The SEA Practice test is available at the UT Arlington Central Library Reserve Desk on the main floor.

Register for the SEA

The Spoken English Assessment will be given on an appointment basis only. To register you must do the following:

  1. Obtain an application from Testing Services, Room 201, Davis Hall.
  2. Pay the $125 fee at the UT Arlington Bursar’s office and return the application showing proof of payment to the Testing Services office, at least 3 business days in advance.
  3. Set up an appointment with Testing Services Staff.

Appointments can only be scheduled at a maximum of one month from the date of registration. Students will be assigned a specific test time on their admission ticket.

SEA Fee

The fee for the Spoken English Assessment is $125.

THE FEE IS NON-REFUNDABLE AND NON-TRANSFERABLE.

RE-TAKE Policy

If a student does not earn a passing score on the Spoken English Assessment, the student may opt to retake the exam after 30 days. It is recommended, however, that the student sign up for the Developemental English course through the English Language Institute.

Test Day Procedures

The Spoken English Assessment is a thirty (30) minute test. You must bring two photo I.D’s (e.g. passport, driver’s license, student ID) and your admission ticket. Examinees are not allowed to bring any type of reference materials or recording devices.

Score Report

The results from the test will take approximately two weeks and will be reported to the Graduate School. The Spoken English Assessment score is available only at UT Arlington and will not be reported to the candidates in writing. However, the student may come to Testing Services with a photo I.D. to receive their scores verbally.
