How to determine your Grade Point Average (GPA)

Definitions:

Cumulative GPA: your grade point average for all courses taken at UTA. This is the GPA used to determine probation/dismissal status and eligibility to graduate.
Semester GPA: your grade point average for just those courses taken in a specific semester. This is the GPA used to determine eligibility for continued academic warning.
Major/College GPA: your grade point average for just those courses taken within a specific major or specific college. This is the GPA used to determine eligibility to remain within a specific major and graduate.

Follow these instructions to calculate a GPA:

1. List each course you have taken at UTA with the number of credits and the course grades. (Transfer courses do not figure into your GPA.)

Course Credits Grade
ENGL 1302 3 Z
BIOL 1441 4 D
POLS 2311 3 A
MUSI 1301 3 B
EXSA 0120 1 A

2. Multiply the number of credits in each course by the number of grade points corresponding with the letter grade.

A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0
P, W, and Z do not have a grade point value. These grades are not used in calculating GPA.

Course Credits Grade Grade Points
ENGL 1302 3 Z 0
BIOL 1441 4 D 4
POLS 2311 3 A 12
MUSI 1301 3 B 9
EXSA 0120 1 A 4

3. Add the credits and the grade points for every course in which a letter grade was received.

Course Credits Grade Grade Points
ENGL 1302 3 Z 0
BIOL 1441 4 D 4
POLS 2311 3 A 12
MUSI 1301 3 B 9
EXSA 0120 1 A 4
  11   29

4. Divide the number of grade points by the number of credits for the semester.
Grade Points = 29 = 2.636 GPA
Credits 11
