Grade Point Deficiency (GPD) is generally used to determine what grades you need to be removed from probation. It can determine how many A’s, B’s, or C’s you need to obtain a specific GPA. Before calculating your GPD, you will need your Grade Point Average.
Sample UT Arlington Student:
You may use the formula and instructions below, or visit the GPA Calculator to have it calculated for you.
1. Multiply the hours attempted at UTA by the desired GPA. This equals the number of grade points the student wishes to have.
45 X 2.000 = 90.0
2. Take the number of grade points the student should have and subtract the number of grade points the student actually has. 90.0 – 83.0 7.0
This student has a grade point deficiency of 7.0.
3. Using GPD to figure out what grades a student needs:
To Achieve a 2.0: GPD is a deficiency, so it may help to look at the numerical value as a negative number, or in this case -7. To Achieve a 2.0, grades in 3-hour courses affect your GPA in the following way:
A= +6
B= +3
C= 0
D= -3
F= -6
So, a student with a 7 GPD would need one A and one B to achieve a 2.0 GPA. (-7 + 6 + 3 = 2) The goal is to get the GPD to zero or higher.
Using the GPD Table:
Since a “C” is worth 2.0 points, any C’s the student receives will maintain their GPA. Anything below a “C” will lower their GPA.
This table is based on 3-hour courses.
| Desired GPA | A | B | C | D | F |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.60 | 7.2 | 4.2 | 1.2 | -1.8 | -4.8 |
| 1.80 | 6.6 | 3.6 | 0.6 | -2.4 | -5.4 |
| 2.00 | 6 | 3 | 0 | -3 | -6 |
| 2.25 | 5.25 | 2.25 | -.75 | -3.75 | -6.75 |
| 2.50 | 4.5 | 1.5 | -1.5 | -4.5 | -7.5 |
| 2.75 | 3.75 | .75 | -2.25 | -5.25 | -8.25 |
| 3.00 | 3 | 0 | -3 | -6 | -9 |

Academic Table of Standards for Continuance
The cumulative University grade point average is calculated on the basis of all work undertaken at UT Arlington, including credit by examination, correspondence and extension, for which a letter grade is given. Grades earned at any institution other than UTA are not used in calculating the University grade point average, but semester hours of transfer credit accepted by UTA are added to hours taken at the University to determine the total college hours undertaken.
| Total College Hours Undertaken (including Transfer hours) | UTA GPA for Academic Probation | UTA GPA for Academic Dismissal |
|---|---|---|
| 0-29 | less than 2.00 | less than 1.60 |
| 30-59 | less than 2.00 | less than 1.80 |
| 60+ | less than 2.00 | less than 2.00 |
