Q. How can I choose what I’m going to do for the rest of my life when I am so young?
A. Choosing a major is not about mapping out the rest of your life. The major you choose now, will likely lead you to many diverse career options in your future. Also, it is not uncommon for individuals to make several career changes in a lifetime based more on experiences rather than the exact nature of the degree.
Q. Is it strange that I’m having so much trouble choosing a major?
A. No, not at all. Over 25% of students new to UTA are undeclared and 50% of all students change their major at least once.
Q. What can I major in so that I will make a lot of money when I graduate?
A. Though salary ranges and job market trends are important to consider, they should not be the sole basis for making a decision. There is a great deal of fluctuation when it comes to what majors are “hot” in the job market at any given time. Most people have a better chance of achieving long-term financial success by excelling in careers to which they are well-suited.
Q. I want to study history, but will I be able to find a job with a liberal arts degree?
A. Although some careers require specific majors (accounting jobs tend to require an accounting degree), many careers can be pursued with any major. As a liberal arts student, you will receive valuable training in writing, research, and critical thinking that will likely be sought after by employers.
Q. This website has given me some great information about choosing a major, but I still don’t know where to start. Is there anyone I can talk to about my situation?
A. If you’re feeling directionless, you may want to start by making an appointment with a counselor in Counseling Services. A counselor can help you…
You can make an appointment by calling 817-272-3671, or you may use the walk-in service from 8-5 TWF, or 8-7 M and Th. Appointments are preferable as there is generally a wait time involved with walk-ins.
You also have the option of seeing our Major Exploration advisor Lynne Von Roeder. Please call 817-272-3140 for an appointment or for permission to take our Major Exploration course.
