Q. What if you don’t pass a section?
A. Your academic advisor will assist you with course selection based upon your TSI status; however, here are some general guidelines:
Failed Reading section only:
Take ENGL 0300
If English is not your first language, take ENGL 0301
Failed Writing section only:
Take ENGL 0300
If English is not your first language, take ENGL 0301
Failed Reading AND Writing sections:
Take ENGL 0300
If English is not your first language, take ENGL 0301
Failed Math section:
THEA score of 0-219 or a failed score at any level on the Accuplacer, Asset, or Compass: take MATH 0301
THEA score of 220-229: take MATH 0302
*NOTE: If you passed the Math section of THEA, but got a 10 or lower on the Math Placement Test (MPT), you may wish to enroll in MATH 0302 in order to better prepare for College Algebra.
Once you have completed a developmental course, you have completed your TSI requirement.
Q. I am concurrently enrolled at another institution and am taking developmental coursework there. Do I have to take developmental coursework at UT Arlington too?
A. If you are enrolled at another institution at the same time that you are enrolled at UTA, you must present a paid fee receipt showing the developmental course(s) you are taking at the other institution to a University Advising Center Academic Advisor. The Advisor will give you permission to register at UTA without developmental courses for one semester.
Q. I failed a TSI-approved test, but I took developmental courses at another institution. Will I have to take developmental courses at UTA also?
A. If you have completed the developmental education sequence at another institution, but have not yet passed a TSI-approved test, an Academic Advisor will evaluate your transfer developmental coursework to determine the appropriate coursework for you. You may be required to enroll in further developmental coursework at UT Arlington. If you are TSI complete, based on developmental course work completion at your previous school, this status must appear on your previous school’s transcript in order for UT Arlington to honor it. If you have completed the highest level development at any Texas state school, provide proof in the form of a transcript to be complete of your TSI requirement.
Q. I’m seeking teacher certification; do I need to take the THEA?
A. Students seeking teacher certification must have the following minimum scores on the THEA test: Reading: 270, Writing: 220, and Math: 230. Exemptions based on SAT, ACT, TAAS or TSI completion from the Accuplacer, Asset, or Compass will not work for purposes of teacher certification.
